No more unlimited data plan from AT&T?!?!? - Page 2

Existing users can keep the unlimited plan unless they want to add tethering. I think the real reason for the shift in plans is to reduce the impact of iPhone tethering, which will be rolling out this summer. The existing base of iPhones is already a giant bandwidth leech, and if you gave people a cheap unlimited tethering option it would probably sink the network.

I use less than 2GB/month myself, so stepping down to the tiered plan would probably save me money.

I think there's a good chance limited data plans or pay-per-byte are the plans of the future. Verizon's hinted as much, and I'm sure everyone's looking to see how AT&T fares with their new plan before jumping in.

I had been on the fence between continuing with getting the Evo tomorrow or waiting for the new Iphone, but this really made my decision easy. I'm pretty sure ATT is setting itself up for June 7, when all the brand new multimedia cloud-based services and other heavy bandwidth uses such as videochat for the new Iphone are announced and Iphone users will have to pay through their noses to access them. Somewhat smart business strategy!

Ding ding ding ding! AT&T has figured out that people will continue to use more and more data -- not less. There are more and more media-rich applications going online everyday. You might save a buck or two now if you're on the cusp, but you're almost guaranteed to pay more in the future.

Evo looks a bit rough right now and battery life is crap. I'll defect over to a 4g phone soon enough since Apple just continually seems to spend time screwing over its customers, but I am not sure the Evo is it.

I don't know why users would expected unlimited data for any service, be it internet or wireless. It costs money to deliver data. The ONLY reason those plans exist at present is because the companies that offer them know that 95% of their users or whatever probably won't use more than 500MB-1GB per month.

Can anyone here claim they use more than 2GB per month on their phone? I don't even know how you'd manage that. I use google maps a fair bit and the web browser semi-frequently, but seriously, that's a lot of usage for a device that's only used a small fraction of the time you need to check something on the internet. And you'd have to send a ton of emails to hit that limit as well.

According to AT&T, 98% of all users are under 200MB. I've got the unlimited plan on my iPad and after a month I'm at 189MB, as I use wi-fi most of the time. I'd planned on going to the $15 plan next month but now that I can't get the unlimited plan back if I change, I'll keep it.

Got it this morning and the battery lasted till now with moderate usage ( I couldn't stop playing around with the phone all day). Obviously, longer would be ideal. The screen is amazing, imo. Larger definitely means better in this case. It did crash once today though, but it might have been my fault for downloading and installing so many apps at once. Sprint's 3g is fairly fast, don't have 4g in NYC. Pretty much all the pages loaded instantly and didn't have to wait too long for internet video to start. Also tried out the Fring videochat with mixed results. Happy to have free video chat but there was lag and stuttering. Hope it gets better once 4g is implemented and 2.2 is available without rooting. Overall, I like this phone so far. Plus, can't wait to dl all the data I want; might break 2 gb just today with continuous pandora and youtube

If this sticks other providers will follow very quickly.

That's why I roll with Verizon.
(And my company pays $115 towards my bill!)

That's the general consensus by the 'experts' online.

It's actually pretty easy if you have a phone that can make youtube vids look decent or stream pandora. As more people get used to things like this (and the new apps that will come out as mobile bandwidth becomes more available) AT&T will be there ready to bend over everyone looking to take advantage.

Picked up the Evo, it's like having my PC with me all the time. The hardest part is not murdering the battery by constantly watching videos or going to media heavy websites for hours.

I guess, but the only time i'd probably even want to stream video is when i'm on a subway or something and then i have no reception. Most other times when I'd want to watch a video I'd have access to a PC.
