Here's what happens when morons get to be in charge

Someone should have thought of this sooner!

Mr. Cale said the league’s 12-person board of directors is not trying to take the fun out of the game, they are simply trying to make it fair. The new rule, suggested by “involved parents,” is a temporary measure that will be replaced by a pre-season skill assessment to make fair teams.
Fucking "involved" parents.

This is absurd. I can understand mercy rules, but I don't get this at all.

So they're trying to teach kids that "fair" means the best team only wins if it's not too much better than the other team?

Commies!

This is the Canadian way. It's a goal tax.

cmon what's wrong with teaching kids a little class when real madrid came to play toronto fc, i think they were courteous enough to allow toronto, the home team, to score a goal (unlike argentina, which solidly thrashed the canadian national team 5-0) edit - just looked up the madrid-tfc game and the score was 5-1, which i guess isnt THAT much better than 5-0

My kids league had a mercy rule. If you're down by 10 points the game is over. But we rarely let it stop us. I think our worst loss was like 16 to 1.

aside from the bad philosophy, it's a bad rule from my experience playing youth soccer, high scores and wide margins are relatively common AND it doesn't even necessarily mean one team is a lot better than the other. It's sort of the opposite of basketball, where youth leagues have very low scores compared w/college games, which are lower scoring than NBA games. Especially in a rec league like this that goes down to 4-year-olds. You could get 5 goals ahead practically by chance with anyone younger than about 8 year olds. THIS part of the rules is a lot more reasonable, at least for, say, under-10s:

Mr. Cholmsky said he would be in favour of temporarily handicapping a team, for example reducing the number of players on the field, over ensuring a team loss for a high score differential. According to the league’s new rules, coaches of stronger teams are encouraged to deter runaway games by rotating players out of their usual positions, ensuring players pass the ball around, asking players to kick with the weaker foot, taking players off the field and encouraging players to score from farther away.

These parents should be ashamed of themselves. They are teaching their children to grow up to be whining losers.

Exactly...it's the opposite if anything. If you work hard and play well as a result, you lose!

so a losing team can own goal 5x and win a match?

That's what I was just thinking as I read it.
