My newer work Dell Latitude D630 (received Jan 2008) has a softer blue "pointing stick" (official name from Dell lol).

I believe that since the pointing stick predates the touchpad as the default pointing device on laptops, and since the early adopters for laptops were generally businessmen, it makes sense to keep this "legacy" technology on business laptops going forward (Latitude line) to appease those old fogies.

I'm young and I hate touchpads. Every one i've ever used has hated my fingers for some reason. The nubby "pointing stick" is far more precise and easier to use.

I have had this exact problem on several Dell laptops. It's even happened when I had a mouse hooked up to it. It's extraordinarily frustrating. You can google it and it's sort of a phantom problem, but you are not alone.

Crossing fingers that it doesn't happen to mine before I have to return it.

I wouldnt be so sure that its not your track pad. Those things, and especially on Dell's are and were notorious for having problems. Also, you cant use device manager to check for updates. Go to dell's website, put your serivce code in (see the bottom) and I promise you there will be a ton of updates including a trackpad one and a bios one.
