Our lifetimes are so short that I just can't get too pumped about news like this anymore.

Yeah, we could see a supernova in a couple of weeks.

Or, if some absolutely teeny tiny trivial thing, say someone dropped a Prius on Betelgeuse as it was collapsing or something, all of a sudden the moment of final schism gets pushed back half a millenium. We don't get to see it, nor our children, grandchildren, their grandchildren....

But, it could happen Sunday week.

And if it did, I think it would be the coolest thing most people would ever see in their lifetimes. I also think that it would fuck up so many different things, many of which we would never be able to predict until it actually happened.

I hope it's more exciting than the Hale Bopp comet which just looked like the sky had a smudge on it.

Man. A dude wouldn't want to try to read this ^ if he'd just smoked a bowl!

Dude, did you ever think that, like, maybe the entire universe is just like this giant atom? Whoah!

So my personal opinion is that this is just another breathless rumor of astronomical doomsday that we get every couple of years. Even if any of the science of it is right, it doesn’t mean Betelgeuse is about to explode any day now. And since this is a rumor three times removed, I don’t put any stock in it. I’ll wait until I hear from named scientists with published or publishable data before I start to wonder if the star is about to blow.

I'm always slightly amazed that some of the most advanced scientific thought occurs in Hawaii. It just seems to be so at odds with the laid back feel of the place.
