So someone explain to me...

How running on hard surfaces damages your knees?

I used to run around 5.5 miles daily for months on the sidewalk, and I never had any knee pain. I would also jump rope on concrete for about 20 minutes a day. I heard stories of kids only doing 3 miles daily for a week before their knees bust out on them. Were they just fat boys or fat girls?

No, I don't have amazing bone structure, nor am I athletically gifted.

you're a kid. what you are doing now will hit you in 20 years. I am on the other end of the line - ran on hard surfaces for years, just starting to feel it now

Yeah, it didn't bother me until my late 20s. Now my left ankle will swell if I run on concrete.

Probably less, as I started to feel it when I turned 30 (I was a 3x/wk runner in my early 20s).

Yes, absolutely. Fat people deserve their painful knees and backs. Always remember that and never, ever, ever get fat.

I think for some folks running on anything leads to bad knees while others will be fine.

I athlete thru high school, but stopped exercising for the first two years of college. At 21 I tried to get back in shape running up to 4 miles / day on concrete or gravel. Wasn't long before my knees became so sore I could hardly walk, maybe 2 months. I'm gentle on my knees now!

I'll explain this in car terms for you. Your knees end up being shock absorbers. Those are the things that give your car a nice ride. If you don't shock load them to death by driving on grass instead of a road full of pot holes they last longer. They'll still wear out eventually but it'll take a lot longer.

You can also look at your knees as if they were a ball peen hammer and a ceramic cup. If you tap the bottom of the cup lightly with the hammer you probably won't break it. Grab the sucker with both hands and really wind up and blast the cup as hard as you can and guess what will happen. Yeah you guessed it, the cup will be in shards.

Do you get what's going on now?

Don't they make running shoes for this kind of thing?

Shoes can actually make the problem worse by promoting heel striking. For snicks you can test this by running with shoes for X and then go barefoot for the same distance. Most people will notice the difference in shock to the knee joint instantly.

So ASICS wouldn't help runners?

Try the experiment and see for yourself.
