Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this.
I am a 23 year old business grad from NJ. I have been working with my dad as an financial advisor for the last 9 months and make a much better living than I would working anywhere else. The problem is that I HATE the area where the office is located. It is in central NJ near the shore, but the area is about 90% familes or senior citizens. There is almost nobody around here in my demographic, that is an early - mid twenties making a decent living working in business. Only places here to go are a few crappy bars with mostly a 30+ year old crowd. The only reason I was able to get this job is because the company believes it is a good strategy for continuity of client relationships. Clients will have an easier time transitioning to dealing solely with me whenever my dad retires, he is the branch manager by the way. So my dilemma is this: is it worth living somewhere I cannot stand in order to make a good living, probably almost twice what I would earn living in the NYC area, which is really where I would love to be?
Possible solution---
I am a good 90 minutes from NYC which is where I really want to be. So I could consider moving to that area while still coming down here to NJ for the week. At least then I would have a fun place to be on weekends. I could stay at my parents during the week so I would not have to commute back and forth everyday. Is this a retarded idea? I would be spending less than half my time in NYC. I would have the benefit of not having to deal with terrible traffic since I would be going the opposite direction of most commuters ( away from the city in the morning, and to the city at night).
The company I work for has branches all over the east coast, including in NYC. At some point I may be able to begin working out of one of those offices. The problem is that if the assets leave the NJ office I am at now, my dad as branch manager would lose money, since he makes a certain amount based off of how much the branch generates. It is possible that his branch and the NYC branch could work out some kind of deal to split the comissions but who knows.
Any thoughts or comments are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks very much.
