First post but i was wondering what you all thought of lip piercings?

I'm going to get my ear pierced soon and i was thinking about doing my lip while I was there, would love to hear your opinions.

Great idea if you belong to this tribe: Lousy idea if you have aspirations of upward career mobility in modern corporate culture or industry.

well i guess that's cleared that up then...

It's certainly not going to fit the any of the prevailing aesthetics here, but if you want it (and you're young enough to get away with it) go for it. I had mine done when I was 20, and I kept it for a couple/few years. It was pretty well received by the type of people who think such things are cool, though it certainly wouldn't have been popular with the Style Forum types.

One bit of advice if you do it: Keep an eye on your teeth. In the struggle between metal and tooth, metal wins every time.

People will tend to think your IQ is 20-30 points below what it actually is. Not me, but people.

I've never found eyebrow or lip piercings attractive.

Nipples = ok / really hot on women
Nose = ok
ear lobes = ok (no stretchings, cartiledge)
tongue = gross but ok

lip / eyebrow / pen0r = teh suck/ugly

YMMV

i am young and i think it would suit my clothing and lifestyle (even i didn't enjoy writing that).

still unsure though, MrG what damage can be done? like staining or like actual damage?

I would say that lip is pretty much my least favorite of the popular body piercings.

If the ring rests on teeth it can erode them. Imagine taking a piece of metal and rubbing it against your tooth. Then imagine having that piece of metal there constantly. There is one tooth on the side where my lip ring was that I think may have experienced a bit of this. It's one tooth that felt like it wore down a bit faster than the others. That said, you can't tell by looking, and my dentists have never been concerned about it, so it may just be natural wear that happened to coincide with having the ring in there.

Also, I know of at least one person who chipped a tooth on a tongue piercing. It was shortly after he had the piercing done, and he wasn't quite accustomed to having it in his mouth. He bit down wrong, and out came a piece of molar. On the other hand, I knew a someone else who inadvertently bit down on the stud, and no damage was done. It's much less likely to happen with a lip piercing, given it's not entirely in your mouth, but it's still a possibility.

This isn't intended to talk you out of it, but it's something to keep an eye on if you decide to get the piercing.

What is your reason for getting piercings?

I pretty much agree with the above. I've seen a couple of really hot chicks with double nose piercings, i.e. a small stud on each nostril, and it looked pretty good, but on the wrong girl, the look is going to backfire.

it's just another accessory really. i can't think of anyone (excluded the afore mentioned tribespeople) would get piercings for any other reason.

Thankyou MrG and everyone, given me a lot to think about.

Of course it does, but isn't that the point? No one gets a piercing on their face and thinks "man, this will really help me blend in with the nine-to-five, clean-cut crowd."
