No one wants to come for the ride! 4000km alone is a long way. Might need to do some couch surfing.

honestly, repair is simple. you can pick up a repair book from any hardware store for your car model, and then when the check engine lights goes on take it to autozone and they will diagnosis it for free. those 2001 impalas are pretty nice cars, and even in poor condition with 160K+ miles are worth $1500 bucks

I say go with you're Mom's car. Take it to a shop close by her and have them give you an estimate on fixing everything. Even if you spend like $1500 that's a lot less then you would pay for a used car and you won't have any payments. Once its fixed go get it and drive it to where you're at. That way you don't have to worry about it breaking down on the way home.

You'll have a decent PAID OFF car and you'll know the history. That's win win in my book.
