Got let go today...

No, seriously. The second layoff is waaay easier than the first.

Ok, so technically it wasnt a lay off since I was a contractor (as Im sure some of you had seen my other threads), but I was full time there for 18 months and treated as an employee. Just a sudden let go, even though I have been looking for a new job (Interview last week, phone interview next Tuesday and I talked with a recruiter tonight, actually) So... doesnt feel too bad man.

It was a quick, professional "you gotta go",which I appreciate. My only real worry is they go through my history and see me posting tips on what you should do when dating someone half your age...

Ok, so my real question. I worked cross functionally with a lot of departments and there were a lot of people I liked and respected. Should I send them an email or a letter just telling them I'm no longer working there, thank them for their help, wish them luck and leave my contact info - or is that a little weird?

oh, and Im going to vegas this weekend too with all my friends. Free sympathy drinks? yes, please. No better way to get over it.

Absolutely do this. Say nothing negative, be courteous, sincere, and short.

Thats what I figured. Mass email to everyone (bcc'd) or individual?

I think sending them an email would be nice. It may be kind of cheesy, but who cares. People don't take the opportunity to tell others that their presence in their lives makes a difference, whether it's your best friend or just the lady who says good morning every day when you walk in the office.

BTW sorry to hear about what happened.

yes you should, specially if you want to correspond with them in the future... in any case hope you get a new job soon- that allows you to have time to give middle aged guys advise on dating young nubile cholas.

thanks all. Ill draft the emails tonight.

Luckily the leads are rolling in - so fingers crossed. The bitch about being a contractor is the tie is severed then and there. I got no severance, vacation pay and Im not even eligible for unemployment. Oh well, nature of the beast. I knew it and was prepared.

Thank god for linkedin too!

Damn man. Sorry to hear it was so unexpected. Best of luck finding a replacement place to contract quickly!

Unless you have a ton of time on your hands (and right now you should be gearing up for Vegas!), just go the mass email route with BCC. As mentioned above, just keep it short, upbeat, polite and friendly. Include your personal email or linkedin info if you'd like. Even if most people do not actually write you later, they will certainly appreciate your parting words and will remember you in a positive way.

gl,

I'm a consultant. I can't help using meaningless bs jargon.

sorry to hear that. yes, do touch base with everyone. good luck with finding something else fast.

I can really recomend setting yourself a strict set of rules and schedule - give yourself X days to rest, then start spending a set amount of time looking for work, go to the gym, run etc. get dressed and shave every day. good luck
