Only happens in newb threads, and realistically, how do you even answer this one? Besides "well, obviously what you do is pick a different direction and move towards that with your wardrobe".

OP, what are you looking for? More formal? More casual? More fashion-oriented? Also, age/height/weight/possibly pix so we can figure out what you'd look good in.

fwiw, this outfit will win or fail based on whether the fit and the shoes are right. The wrong fit and frankenstein shoes is usually the problem when people try this.

So no one can offer substantive help until you post a fit pic of the specific items you are referring to.

How to not be "dressy": be casual. I'm confused, OP. Mainly because your thread title and post ask two completely different questions. Are you asking us to tell you if you're doing it right (if so, lol) or are you looking for information about attractive options for casual wear? Also,

Wear sneakers instead of dress shoes and a tee instead of a dress shirt. Problem solved.

that's why it's called dress shoes, cuz it may add that 'dressy' to your casual outfit. Go for the sneakers if you want casual.

light colored prewashed jeans is pretty casual too imo

Add some faded jeans, t shirts, rubber soled shoes or sneakers... I think the jeans and rubber soled shoes/sneaks will make a big difference in any outfit. Also, lighter colors are more casual than darker colors.
