The canvas ones were part of the standard uniform of the local hardXline straightXedge scene. Vans eras, madras/j-crew style shorts, fitted polos, white t-shirt, some sort of hemp/bead necklace, and a baseball cap + shaved/cropped crew cut. Always a negative connotation in my mind (punks wore chucks or vans old skools, assholes wore vans eras... I think that still applies... ).

these are also a great shape for an all white shoe. you could probably find a pair (fred perry kingston) with a white logo if you don't like the branding.
