F1 returns: Austin, TX to serve as new host - Page 2

Austin would be a great site for a World Rally event, but F1? I just wish Mayor Will Win could be back in office for that!

It's no F1, but I am really looking forward to the IndyCar event they're going to hold in Baltimore. First one is coming this year!!!!!!

Highlights from the article:

1. Financial penalties if the race doesn't occur in 2012
2. No one can seem to dig up the records of any land purchased for this event
3. No one can seem to dig up who the financial backers are
4. Tavo Hellmund's response (the promoter):

Quote:
"Why is that anybody's business?" added Hellmund. "I've got a big group put together that is world class, well known, and a lot of them are going to want to stay anonymous."

I was betting this would not occur in 2012, but now I'm going to double down. This has the same smell as US F1.

Apparently the Texas state government has committed to paying $25m per year to help it happen. Payment from the Texas Special Events Fund

Smells a bit like disaster looming.

FWIW, I enjoyed the Texaco GP races when they were in downtown Houston.

I'd go to this.

I've chosen not to get excited or pessimistic about this race in Austin. As with everything else in F1, we will see.
