Do we exist in our own world?

I met a men's shoe designer who works for a major company who claimed that he'd never heard of Mark McNairy. Is that possible? Do we live on a strange little style island?

The rest of the world thinks Dolce & Gabbana is the bees knees. Yes, we are a little self sustained microsm.

as far as i know, Mark McNairy isn't that well known.

has he heard of Crockett and Jones? John Lobb? Alden?

Is Mark McNairy even that popular here? I know Epaulet carries it but I don't think I've seen any in WAYWT or Recent Purchases. They're good shoes (not really my thing), but I don't think it's a large brand at all.

the only part of my style that i'm even particular about is shoes for some reason. i like very comfortable kicks that are super low key but funky stylish.i wear a lot of sanuks (been a fan way before sharma kickstarted that bandwagon) if i can't wear sandals. (my newest pair of sanuks)
I really couldn't think of a polite way to say "those are absolutely without a doubt among the most awful things, not just shoes but things, I have ever had the severe misfortune to have beheld."

JD, do you moderate on a surfing or skiing forum? Those things seems to be popular with the surfer dudes I know, and also with some skiiers and outdoor pursuits folks.

A lot of designers, especially those who work in a technical, specialized field for a large company, don't really have a very wide field of view. I know a few designers who essentially don't know any retailers outside of those who carry their product, for example. They rely on their PR and sales people, and are fine with that. They simply are not interested in that aspect of the business.

Mark McNairy is definitely a known quantity. The guy has been design director for J. Press for a while now, he's got this thing going on with Bass, and he shows at Capsule, which is pretty well known.

And yes, we exist in a little bubble. That's pretty obvious.

Skiing. However, unsurprisingly skiers are very similar to surfers in the off-season, though mountain biking is generally the preferred summer sport since a lot of them aren't anywhere near an ocean. Most of them basically wear skater clothes. Those shoes are just offensive though.

One of those things attacked me on a hiking trip once.
