Thanks Geek. If I wanted to play (real low stakes) online what would you guys recommend? I played Pokerstars for a couple months back in the day and did alright with nickels and dimes.

play $.05 / $.10 or $0.25 / $0.50, you want like 30 buy-in's for whatever level you are playing. Read a book or two, play a bit, read some newb guides on 2p2.

You really want to actively think about every single decision you make. Work things out in your head as much as you can, reasons for why you are doing something. This analysis process will help you get better.

I've just noodled around the web looking for tips and tricks and read them while I was playing a no$ game... eventually I learned what I liked and didnt.

I cant bring myself to play for $ online. Seems ripe for getting swindled.

I like to play local games with friends, good atmosphere, beer. I like to practice on Zynga. Free, and hundreds of thousands of players. Good interface, lots of different levels. Best place to learn I can think of.

If you're regularly getting killed by a player, just don't play at his table. Table selection is supremely important and this is part of it. If someone is consistently winning against all probability on some crummy site, be a little suspicious. Either way, if you're managing yuor bankroll properly, losing a few hands isn't the end of the world. That said, I don't worry about it too much at the big sites, and it would probably only be a concern at medium and high stakes. If you're a winning player, you're giving up much more by not playing online because of this fear than you would be losing to cheating. Live games are so slow...

microstakes is where you should start, as kelvin suggested. Stars is fine.

Bankroll management 101:

Also, buy a copy of poker tracker or hold'em manager. Download the trials first and read some tutorials to see what they can do. Once you figure which you prefer, buy one. They're invaluable for tracking your progress, analyzing your game, and keeping track of opponents and their tendencies, which is impossible to do without software because in a short time you'll sit against thousands of them.

Only play one or two tables at a time to start.

Also, realize you're going to need to put in many, many hours of learning and frustration until you become profitable. It took me a good 4-5months until I made any decent money, and this was with active learning most days.

^^ yeah and short sessions are usually better. limit yourself to a couple hours. You ahve to be really self-aware in poker or you'll start bleeding money. For me, as soon as i hit 2.5 hours, my mind would start to wander and i'd start doing dumb ****. I think a lot of people don't have this awareness and it prevents them from winning consistently. Discipline is as much a part of the game as anything else.

There are lots of variables here, type of game, your stack, his, etc - but for me this is a rule of thumb. Occasionally you'll get a tool that bets on whatever he has but the chances he'll hit are small. The objective here is to get, say 5 people, to fold down to 1 or 2. Then you're favorite.

Oh I know. I do this and will get called and this **** happens. I like to bluff quite a bit when I feel weakness around me so maybe that has to do with getting big raises called. Dunno, just appears to always happen to me. I don't think I've played in over a year now.

I remember my first time playing poker against other people besides friends. I hadn't played much but decided to play a $1-$2 table (I think, just remember the max bet was up to $12/person if everyone kept raising) at the Excalibur in Vegas. I get dealt rockets and i think i was on the button. It gets to me with only callers and I max raise. Everyone folds but one buy re-raises. So I do the same, etc. til the max. Flop is **** so I raise, he raises, etc. 4th street and river are the same. So I'm thinking this guy has something since he re-raised my raises since pre-flop to the max. ****** turns over a 3-5 off suite to hit a straight. I look down at the flop again and see that he wasn't open ended and had to hit runner-runner to hit it and didn't have any pairs, flush draws, etc... I was pissed and gave him a stare down for staying in the whole time with such ****. I was new and only knew how to play but didn't know about no limit. I told my friend afterwards and he told me about the no limit tables. I vowed to never play a limit table ever again. Not exactly the 2 outer i described earlier but I still remember this one as it really pissed me off at the time.

Even small changes in stakes can give your tables a very different composition that should affect the way you play. Also, if you kept losing money on the turn you were probably not folding enough. Sometimes you have to fold that TP. It's strongest pre-flop. Also, post-flop you want to thin your opposition as early as possible whenever you can. This is easiest when you have position. If you have a decent hand and let people make it to fourth street and they beat you with a gutshot or something, often times, it was probably your fault, especially at low stakes where people play a very straightforward game and don't have much strategy.

Really though, if people at your table are consistently going to the turn, you should be milking that **** cause they are playing with nothing most of the time.

I would play cash games quite a bit because I always did well and won money in cash games. I got pretty good at knowing when to hold em and when to fold em. If I got to the river without making a nice bet to take down the pot, I either lost my bluff, called just to see the other persons hand even though I thought I was beat to get info (only if I could afford to and the pot wasn't big enough), or won. It's just I kept getting knocked out of tourneys or losing a big pot when I made a big raise (usually after making decent to big raises beforehand) when the other person had a 4% chance to hit their card. So I just got over poker.

When I see pocket AA, KK or QQ the first thing I think is "I'm either going to win a small pot or lose a big one". Its not that hard to beat, all you need is someone to better a pair... while its hard to tear yourself away from them you cant be afraid to fold. Kenny Rogers...
