What do you do for a living?

I want to see if there's a relation between fine dressing and respectable careers? If you feel like listing how much you make, that could be fun too..but if you feel uncomfortable don't feel obligated!

I'm a 23 year old recent graduate from University with an Electrical Engineering degree, still looking for work. Currently working at an Oil & Gas trust company in the Accounts Payable dept. (Blech, hoping to move around to the eng dept soon).

I make $40k a year (canadian), that being said I don't fathom being in this position for very long, only until I find a real engineering job (then hopefully $60k+).

my general observation, f.o finance (hf/pe/ib) = sterile, fit is everything. buyside is more casual. accountants = very broad term, you see some of our tax guys go balls out and rock an occasional bow tie, given appropriate setting, but they're smart enough to keep everything else conservative to give some juxtaposition. there's the occasional black suit + brown shoes.. very tongue in cheek and knowing while the rest of the GQ plebeians who took the LIRR coming into the city are shaking their heads, incapable of assessing such awesomeness. i'd say accountants are the smartest of the bunch in that they're creative (gotta love creative accounting) enough to step outside the sidelines to try something unconventional, but smart and conservative enough to not overdo it (ala full striped seersuckers suits (only half!)) 2nd tier front office = more brand name conscious, will forgo a bit of fitting to get a good deal, and look to tailor lawyers + media/advertising types = surprisingly grouped together, straight out of a GQ mag, nothing interesting here.. navy suit always = brown loafers, which is standard but the followership mentality is probably born from some some insecurity deeper than clothing (ie lawyer wants to jump into finance/accounting due to more $$ these years, media type is an ass clown in his BS industry and tries to feel normal and accepted outside of work) doctors = COMFORT IS KING.. the only 2 doctors i know well are ER doctors.. they're on their feet for 12 hours shifts, and once they get home and put on a suit it better be damn comfortable.. not to say they're ill fitting suits at all. other people = usually try too hard to come off as not trying too hard exceptions abound.
