Well, in New Zealand i believe they have Rugby Union. I also believe they are pretty good at it too, as demonstrated by their recent victory over the Aussies

Thanks, Globe. I think I've heard of that, and heard that it's a good all-round discipline. Maybe I'll look into it.

Drake, if you're looking for glamour in Polo, then I hope you have LOTS of coin. 95% of polo players are just weekend warriors. That is, we tack & groom our own horses. If you have at least $30K sitting around (10K each for three starter ponies), $2-5K/yr for greens fees, $1-2K for tack and other equipment, then $1-3K/yr for pro fees, then you can play at the entry level of low-goal polo. Not trying to discourage you, because if you like competitive sport, it is probably the most fun you can have in 7 minutes!! Just don't expect the "exclusivity" or "glamour" until you can hire a team of pros and buy them all $10-30K ponies (for a total of 24), and at least one full-time groom to handle the dirty work.

In any case, I encourage everyone to take at least one little set of polo lessons at some time in their lives. It's magical. And gives you a whole new appreciately for the athleticism of the ponies.

I played tennis from age 5 to high school, then I screwed up my chance at making my high school team because I took up racquetball and messed up my swing - too much wrist action and a lot of very tough competition at my school.

Played one year of JV Football in high school before realizing that at 5'4" and barely 100 lbs (with my pads on) it wasn't the right sport for me - but got a lot of credit for sticking it out for an entire year.

Wound up running cross country and track (mile and two-mile) for my final two years of high school.

Played on the lacrosse club for three years in college because it looked like fun.

Currently, I lift weights at least three times a week, play golf once in a blue moon, ski when I can get to snow, and chase the kids around. Oh, and I'm still trying to learn to rollerblade.

Youth soccer, hockey, junior diving and swimming, and six games of HS football freshman year are pretty much the only organized sports I've actually participated in. For fun and fitness I've been involved in Boxing, various other self defense and martial arts for brief periods of time, baseball/softball, bowling, track and field, and I just played my first game of croquet on Saturday. I sucked.

High school: baseball. Growing up baseball, soccer, a bit of basketball were the organized sports I played. Baseball was the only one I didn't completely suck at. I wish I'd played more than a few years of soccer, as I now appreciate the sport a lot more. But moving from an East Coast community where I'd never seen or touched a soccer ball to California where all the kids had several years of experience under their belts left me behind the curve and I soon lost interest.
I didn't play any intercollegiate sports; during college I played intramural softball (men's and coed), water polo, basketball, and flag football. The core group of my UC Berkeley Intramural Champions (I still have the t-shirt in the bottom of a drawer somewhere, talk about clinging to faded glory) coed softball team also went on to win an Oakland City League championship.
(Because the level of prior playing experience and thus talent tends to vary more widely among women than men, we discovered that the formula to a winning coed team is to have competent guys backstopping kick-ass women).
Now, I play basketball and a bit of soccer recreationally, and from time to time play in a municipal softball league.

I used to play premier tier 1 soccer up here in Calgary about 5-6 times a week, it was really competitive. Then politics screwed me over and left me hangin without a team. I've always been a track athlete, now I run for the University, Track all the way! I have my moments in Badminton, but I cant be compared to the provincial guys. And I used to play Table Tennis quite avidly, not so much now.

Presently - basketball, football around the holidays when everyone's in town.

Not really sports but also backpack, hike, kayak, and bike.

Incidentally, basketball has proven to be a great social networking activity as well. Have met many friends and made many contacts through it. I imagine golf is even better, but I have neither the skill nor the inclination to pick it up right now.
