Anybody a 4 hours of sleep kinda guy?

Thread Starter
i have 2 in my department.. i'm pretty sure one is medicated on something to keep him going (whether coke, meth, or some pill) and is jittery and moody due to his workload (or pill side effects).

the other, despite coming in early and working super late (2AM average, many times past 4AM), seems always relaxed, eased, and jovial.. still can go out for brews at 3AM after the office and be at it bright and early next day.

so i need to be like the latter (no coke thanks)..

in college i slept about 9 hours per day.. straight out of college it turned into 7-8 hours due to work and now you can say i average 6-7 hours of sleep..

during periods of adjustments i get super cranky even if i miss 1 hour.. but so long as i keep a certain schedule i'm fine..

i wonder if being a 4 hour sleeper is genetic or if it's just another thing that can be picked up, just like many things with repitition.

It also depends how old you are. Younger people don't need as much sleep.

when I was younger I would do maybe 2 nights a week on 4 hours, something like that. now I do one or two a month

It's the opposite. People sleep less as they grow old. People at the age of 70 sleep in average two hours less per night than when they were 30.

Why do you want to stay up late?? You're not really missing much and the body needs rest. There are a lot of 35-40 y.o. I know who look in their mid 50's from too many late nights and not enough sleep.

Is your co-worker Asian by any chance? I've seen incredible sleeping habits among Asians (going forever with little sleep, operating feverishly at 4 am, or the Japanese salaryman's uncanny ability to sleep and wake up at his train stop without any alarms). Men with slimmer builds tend to exhibit the 4 hours of sleep capability, obviously because they need less fuel, but a lot of it I think is that they're just thick-skinned. e.g., just because they're jolly and energetic OP doesn't mean their bodies aren't wrenching under the unhealthy habit... their mind just isn't picking up on it for whatever reason. Don't turn into one of those guys that sleeps awful hours 5 years on end and then on his first real vacation realizes he's wasted his life and health...

It sounds possible if you've grooved a solid routine, say midnight to 4am every day. I think for it to work, you would have to just pass out at midnight, and sleep solid all the way through til 4am...no waking up or tossing and turning.

Wired did an article about a year back on sleeping 2 hours a day, recommending 3o min naps every 6 hours...sounded interesting.

ime it just comes down to accepting that you are tired, sucking it up, and moving forward with your day.

i guess it's just something that people get used to. i used to sleep a lot but now i can stay up as late as 3am and then wake up at 5am but can still stay awake the whole day and i don't drink coke or any pills.

I usually get 6-7 a night. I prefer 9-10.

I used to get 5-6 and be fine for the 14 hours standing at work the next day. But now I'm so used to getting 8+ that I feel like it's going to be a rude awakening (no pun intended) when I get hired somewhere.

I need my 8 hours. However, I can and have done 12 hour work days.

You always pay for it one way or another, whether you notice or not. I had an exam yesterday and I only had 6 hours of sleep, as you can already guess I did a lot worse than I should have, made some rather stupid mistakes that I probably wouldn't have made if I had a better sleep. In retrospect I did a lot better in my previous exams that I had more sleep for and I've also found that I remember a lot more/have more motivation when I'm not pressed for sleep.

It's definitely different for different people. I read that Rachel Ray sleeps 3 or 4 hours a night, and yet many people consider her to be gratingly perky and energetic.

If I get less than 6, I'm dead on my feet. 8-9 is optimal for me.

5-6 average I guess. Any less and I wouldn't have any damn free time thanks to my chosen career.
