Help and advice with Hairstyle

Hello,
I have a picture of what my hair looks like right now. I believe myself and Tom cruise have fairly simmilar hair. I want to go for one of his longer cuts but im not sure how to really do it, and do it without it looking awkward as the hair grows around the ears(the awkward stage of growing out hair).

Here are some links to tom cruise cuts Id like to shoot for:

http://www.mtv.pl/uploads/pr/10/15/T...ie%20Holms.jpg (seems to be the easiest to achieve, is the hair layered on the sides?)
http://tvhipster.com/img/tomkat-preggers.jpg (another easy one i rly like)

and finally here is me right now:

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

In the picture with his then-wife, his hairstyle, er, dwarfs him and is not flattering.

The third and fourth styles are the easiest, you're right. The third probably is layered on the sides. The fourth is less likely to grow into a mess, and your smaller ears wouldn't be overwhelmed by it. It's also acceptable for more situations, without venturing into the slick preppy look in the photo that's probably from The Firm.

If the hair starts to grow too much around the front of the ears, it's not hard to trim it yourself.

Could my hair start to be layered right now? Or is it not possible at this time/length? I am looking forward to changing up my hair! haha. Also, the hair in the back is turning into a tail, how do i get that to be more flat in back? What should I ask the barber to do when I go for a style.. EDIT: Also, i have cowlicks in front..will they dampen my efforts to style my hair into the pictures i provided? OR do they help?

You'll have to explain what you mean by that. Are you talking about the top of the neck?

The cowlicks shouldn't make a difference.

It is worth waiting for more length before you have your hair styled. When you do, go to a stylist instead of a barber. After the first cut, your barber might be able to do maintenance.

Your hair is already "layered". A hair stylist will be better able to deal with longer hair. Just tell the stylist that you want to let your hair grow (pics always help) and they will cut it accordingly.

Your "tail" in the back is because your hair is growing out. The hair cut is short and needs to be modified to look good as it is growing out.

Cowlicks are a good thing (usually). That will help with the style in the front. Work with your cowlicks, not against them. It will make life and your "look" better!

I would be careful with growing your hair out. It looks like you have a longer / oblong - ish face. Long hair when not cut to match your features can make your face and head look longer.

Hello again. Want to just say thanks for the input so far! My hair is getting annoying now to maintain. I am thinking about going short. My usual short is about half an inch or a little bit less on the top, but a fade on the sies and back . Im thinking now that I have more hair on my head, If I get a half an inch or less all around, it might look really good. And If I get my front and bangs cut very short, and spike it up, it would look slick. I dont know If I shoul go through with it or not... :/

Spiking generally is a bad idea. It wouldn't be a good match for your face shape, either.

sorry, i too quickly posted that reply. I meant spike the front up a bit if the bangs were short. Haha I have been the full spiking route, made me look like a tool.
