Have you ever been on fitness holidays? (e.g. 1 to 4 weeks of a coached intensive training program in the wildlife/by the beach/outdoors) Any tips?

Going on Sierra club's hikes for a few consecutive days might be a low cost option worth considering.

i remember the north face stores used to offer hiking holidays in italy. where you'd go on killer 9 hour hikes in the mountains then stay in 5 star hotels afterwards with massages and all. i had a friend that raved about them. that was like 6 years ago though.

That sounds very interesting, especially the "stay in 5 star hotels afterwards with massages". Worth getting a great treatment after a day of rough training

I did a REI adventure trip. Its a lot of activity and requires a certain level of fitness and not being a pussy, but its more about the activity than the workout itself. http://www.rei.com/adventures

this sounds exactly like the trip my friend took to italy about 6 years ago. maybe they partnered up with REI later. looks like they made them more affordable too by not having them stay at 4-5star accommodations.

I spent a week at Bikini Boot Camp.

not that those wouldn't be cool, but why not something that would be a little more fun as well as contribute to fitness -

appalation trail segment
bike the danube bike trail
study thai boxing in a thai boxing camp

etc

The American Hiking Society hosts volunteer vacations throughout the US. I have been on two of these excursions and enjoyed them immensely. Much more affordable than the REI trips.

I can add to the list- learn to dance samba and capoeira in Brazil

I did some time in prison. That was kind of a fitness holiday. I got in great shape too, in spite of the food.

I like the idea of a real fitness holiday, but my problem is that I usually am unable to sleep deeply or soundly when I travel. Most of my training regimen is "portable, but I rarely exercise on vacation because I'm always tired as fuck from not sleeping well.

But goddamn, I'd love to go to Mexico or Brasil for a month and just lift weights, eat and hang out.
