Intelligent posters only - re: Lost (the TV series) - Page 2

Despite the broad popularity and network status, it's best too think of it like you would a sci-fi show with a geeky following. As in: hamfisted, dilettante allusions to big themes like religion and science, overall cheesiness, poor acting, poor dialogue, overlycomplicated backstory/mythology. Lost will never be mistaken for a great show, but it can still be a lot of fun.

I think one of the problems was that it didn't start off particularly sci-fi (except maybe for the Monster). People figured that most mysteries back then had a logical, clear-cut explanation. And then along comes Season 5 which pretty much introduced a ton of sci-fi concepts that turned some people off -- especially members on here.

If you didn't get the sci-fi and supernatural elements from season 1 you weren't watching. But yeah it worked almost through revelation where the more you advance the more these elements accumulate and take the forefront. Honestly the series is stronger thematically than plot wise, which is fine by me.

I'm just saying because the supernatural and sci-fi elements of Season 1 were not as prominent as later seasons, I found the plot more intriguing. Generally, I preferred more grounded mysteries (I.E. revelation of Ethan Rom, finding the beech craft, and the discovery of hatch) to the more bizarre ones (I.E. smoke monster, time-jumping, and the appearance of the deceased). The show is still engaging and the reason I enjoy this season is it parallels the first season in a lot of ways. Like you said, the show is strong thematically which more than makes up for the plot. At this point, I'm way more interested in the characters than anything else. ETA: Recap is on CTV right now and I've forgotten how important Walt was in the first few seasons.

I think the 'roids are compromising your ability to focus on anything other than breasts and Raf Simons.

I liked seasons 4-5 of Lost, and only started watching the show because my girlfriend had the box set. I don't watch much TV, but I've stayed with this show because it's so different, formally, from other TV programmes. You know what's about to happen next in most TV shows, and you pretty much know what the characters will say: but in Lost I don't know what the hell is going to happen next. Often I don't know what the hell is happening. That said, the characters are very thin (meh, sometimes the characters are thin in Pynchon and DeLillo novels). I think liking the show depends on how much you appreciate unusual forms of storytelling; how much you value suspense; and how low your lintel is when it comes to mildly retarded characters.
