Intelligent posters only - re: Lost (the TV series)

Thread Starter
I watched 4-5 episodes of this a few years ago at the end of Season 1. Seemed soap opera-y but entertaining. Anyway... It seems that everyone is all over this show, completely obsessed with it. A lot of these people are pretty dumb and I would not consider their taste in entertainment seriously. Can anyone intelligent that has watched significant parts of Lost give me a neutral non-fanboy/non-hater description of the show? Kind of how I can say I watch Entourage but that it is pretty much a waste of time in the more recent seasons, only watchable because I have already invested so much time in the characters and plot (or the vague semblance of one). Is Lost worth watching? Or is it a cheap thrills waste of time? Is it crack for TV junkies? Is it really as good as The Wire (at least according to IMDB ratings), or is that a joke? Is it the Dan Brown or the Fyodor Dostoevsky of television?

Nowhere near the wire. I like Lost even though I feel like it kinda lead me on a dummy mission. You cant take Lost too seriously, I think thats why some fans are pissed. They took it too seriously and now their realizing that theres a good chance that things wont be explained. If you like to theorize, connect dots, and search through red herrings. Than you might like Lost. Just take it lightly.

Definitely not as good as The Wire. It lacks the subtlety and realism. Lost makes up for it with pretty intriguing mysteries. The first season of Lost was certainly great television. No matter what the writers say, they pretty much made it up as they went along as evidenced by numerous plot holes and inconsistencies. That being said, the writing has definitely improved since they made it clear that the show would end after 6 seasons. Personally, it's not all about answers for me. And I know I won't be going into the finale expecting everything to be explained. It's funny how you mention that investing so much time in characters of Entourage is the reason you still watch it. I'd say that sums up 80% of the audience of Lost.

I don't know if I'm smart enough to offer an opinion in this thread, but Lost is awful. Don't waste your time with it.

Not sure how you could even try and compare The Wire to Lost....must only be based on popularity, not content.

well the whole series of lost is available to watch on hulu... so its easier to follow. its like a well done mix of jerry brukheimer, jj abrams, and m. night shamamamlalbam... so its easy to follow, will make you angry, entertain you, offers a whole 3 season korean tellanovella, then turn into fantasy sci-fi even if you don't want it to. pretty good like an A-/B+.

the wire is actually hard to follow (it needs you to invest into it) but once you do... the wire is very very rewarding to watch... its like reading tolstoy or something just for your own entertainment not because you have a term paper about it.

I stopped watching at the end of season two, with the intention of checking back in after the series ended to see if it was worth watching 3-6.

Can't say I've missed it or that I anticipate watching the rest. I'd be pretty shocked if they came to any satisfying conclusion....seemed pretty clear they were just making it up as they went along.

Not as good as the Wire (or breaking bad), but worth watching. I feel like Lost is really a show of extremes, it's had some of the best acting/writing and some the worst (unlike the wire that is consistantly on top of it's game). It's strongest point is creating a show with a mythology that draws you in, wanting to know more. Lost love allusions to people, literature, other movie/tv shows and they usually fit in well thematically. Some people like delving into that, some don't.

Due to the nature of the show it also creates a richer back story for many of the characters (for better or worse). You do have to pay attention though and you really can't skip an episode, so you really have to commit to it.

After the first two seasons every season after has started somewhat weak and then really picks up as the season moves along. It's also been very good at carrying certain motifs and themes consistantly across the show (for example: good versus evil, and playing with the meaning of them).

I don't think they were making it up (in terms of the larger story arc/eventual end) but you can't sit down and plan out a television show with an unidentified end date from start to finish, mapping out every event and character. I think the show has ended up where they wanted it, but getting there is a creative process in itself.

I started watching around 3 weeks ago, I have now begun season 6 in a last minute attempt to finish it at the same time as everyone else (Monday evening). It is good pop-culture stuff, very fluff but well written and usually with good pacing. Mystery/sc-fi/supernatural/whatever works really well and stuff gets revealed but not all at once. Some characters are truly memorable (say Benjamin Linus). I don't see the point in comparing it to The Wire, although you'll be pleased to see a Wire favourite playing a small role. Main thematic seems to be parricide and births if you're into those...

+1. It isn't incredibly deep or life-changing, but it is more than just mind-numbing TV. It is fun to watch and easy to get caught up in, especially when you start seeing all the flashbacks with various characters or as, like Fuuma mentions, Benjamin Linus' character develops over time.

That said, I'm really happy I'm watching it on DVD b/c I feel like if I didn't have the option to immediately watch the next episode, I'd be pissed off every time the new one ended.

Don't watch it, babies and births become even more important as seasons advance.

But it has no significance to the storyline resolution and is abandoned, like so many minor characters, as the show comes to a close. Unless the finale involves Jack knocking up the smoke monster to kill it, that is.
