any mineral/ iron ore experts here????

I know this is a weird question for this forum but I need help urgently.

Anyone who knows the formula for calculating iron concentrate from raw iron? There are terms like recovery, fe content etc. I see people writing 70% recovery, with average fe content of 18%, there will be xx amount of iron ore concentrate, with 60% fe content.

I just do not know how they are all related.

Thanks.

Its quite simple in principle.

Say for example, your mine produces 100,000t of ore that contains 6% iron, that means there is a potential of 600t of ore.

The raw ore is crushed, the waste discarded, and a concentrate is produced. Ignoring any losses in the crushing process and assuming 100% iron content in the concentrate, the concentrate produced by the mill will be 100,000 t x 0.006 = 600t @ 100% fe.

This then goes to the smelter, assuming something like 90% smelter recovery, 600t of pure iron goes in and 540t of iron comes out.

This is off the top of my head, I'll have to dig out the textbooks to get all the formulas out, as there are many other factors that will influence the final grade.

I won't be able to post for 2 weeks though, as coincidently, I'm flying out to start my standard 14 days on at the iron ore mines.
