A map that size could be pretty expensive. Like thousands of dollars. My brother is a Geography student, and our mom got him a pretty slick map for Xmas last year. It's probably 5 feet long by 3 feet tall. Very arts. Looked like that .. cost like $300 framed. I think she found it at an art show here. Check the interweb's, you can find maps all over the place.

My guess for why you like this map is its aged look and the different projection. You can have any map printer print this map for you. It will lack the aged look and just be a brand new map. This looks like some type of polar projection. I'm not exactly sure the projection type used by this map because if it were a polar projection the land mass nearest to the north pole would actually be larger than masses near the equator.

Maps are not cheap.

That's exactly what I like about this map. The age and projection.

I have always been surprised by the overall costs of older maps. In what few map stores I've seen in my day, they've always been surprisingly costly.

Maps require very precise printing. They were and still are actually used for things that need a high degree of precision.

I have no idea how to shop around for old maps, especially ones that use odd projections. If it were me I would start doing a little research into projections and find an interesting one you like. Have some place print it up and age it yourself, using tea or something like that.

Some other website is selling the same EXACT thing for $500...

A lot more to choose from on the Nat Geo site, but none quite like that found in the original post...

Also see their collection of "Classic Maps": http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/n...ryLevelId=A106

There's a map store in DC that sells nothing but maps. Somewhere near the white house.
