At 80k, that's roughly $200 a month or 3%. I've seen Civics and similar cars for leases around there with 2-3k in start up costs. I was probably being too conservative though.

I drive a 2006 VW Jetta TDI and the wife has a 2001 GMC yukon XL.

I have a 70 mile one way commute and the TDI Jetta gets me 42 - 44 MPG's which for me is important. I also plan to drive it till the wheels fall off and since it only has about 65K miles I'm thinking I can put another 250K on it pretty easy as long as I keep up on the maintenance.

It has taken my wife and I a long time to get to the point where no car payment is better then a newer car but having to make payments. So hopefully i should pay off the Jetta in about 18 months and then we're going to do our best to pay cash for vehicles after that.

As far as the P/U's goes I'd love a Toyota Tacoma but don't see it happening any time soon. Maybe I'll find a good deal on one for my weekend car.

'95 Nissan Pathfinder. 240k+ miles, daily driver and offroad mods and it's still going strong! I'm hoping to move up to a early model Xterra soon when the $$ comes.

(Can I sound anymore Amish?) A n ew car would be great and nice, but I just don't see it as a smart expenditure at my current income level ($55-60k, depending on side jobs). I'd rather invest in my house at this point.

Anyway, I currently have two Jeep Wranglers, a 1995 & a 1997. Paid cash for both.

This. We have a '96 Miata, and '95 Ranger, and because Mrs. T insisted, an '06 Commander. I traded in a '98 Cherokee with transmission problems for the Commander - and strangely I don't regret it.
