So i played two nine-hole rounds friday and saturday.

Course: a sweet golf resort. Lots of fun. Best part was Saturday. They have the main draw an 18 hole which I played front nine of on friday and a nine hole course out back. There were literally 10 carts waiting to tee off on the main course saturday, NO ONE HAD STEPPED FOOT ON THE NINE HOLE COURSE ALL DAY WITH NO TEE TIMES BOOKED. Yeah, I played the second course. Nowhere near as nice as the main but several leagues above a public course. So much fun to play two tee shots on a hole and use both balls. Like playing 18 holes!

On Friday I figured out and solved what had been plaguing about 85% of game...quite simply i was standing waaaaay to far away from the ball. When I stood closer I no longer had to swing wildly with the club, i wasn't lifting up mid-shot, my shots were going mostly straight etc. However, I still have no distance and can't really control the ball that well. shot about +1 most holes, had a couple +2. Wasn't that bad.

Saturday I think I reverted back to old ways and was pretty bad. Nothing much more to say.

Made a rule for myself as well...no driver except long, straight par fives. I can't hit it to save my life. Used my other woods and was much more successful. Also, I refuse to chip from close distances. I pitch and run. Actually, won't lie to you...I'm pretty good at that, but nothing else. I also didn't wear a glove, I felt like that helped me get a better sense of how tightly i was gripping the shaft.

Can't wait for third round of the season!

I try not to let my ego get in the way when picking which club to hit. My first time out on Sunday, I didn't hit anything longer than a 5-iron all day, including the par-5s. I need a little time at the start of the season to sort myself out.

My friend, who hit his biggest club every chance he got, gave me a hard time. In the end, I beat him by a stroke, much more if we'd counted our handicaps.

Anyhow, I went out again today and took out the 4-iron. My swing is looking to be in pretty good shape. I might hit a 3-iron next time I'm out.

I like, semi-old school. Player's bag if you ask me. Accurate?

That said, technology is currently well ahead of everything you're playing (I'd let you keep the Cleveland wedge if the grooves are still in decent shape but I've got a feeling they're not).

I see this situation often and it bothers me because getting well fitting clubs with recent technology is cheap and easy. Free launch monitors (which will help you better understand your swing, your equipment and areas for improvement) are available at local golf retailers. Once you've figured out what gear would work for you head over to eBay. Very good two to three year old clubs (IMO this is the sweet spot if you're looking to maximize bang for buck) in good condition can be found dirt cheap (drivers under $100, fairway woods and hybrids $50-75ea, iron sets for around $200-300, etc) there.

I agree completely! A few years ago I spent $45 for 1 hr plus on a launch monitor with sales rep/pro to find the right driver. I tried 5-6 and picked the best one. The store wasn't going to charge me for the time if I bought their Ping driver, MSRP $435 + tax (no discount on Ping Clubs). I passed and went to eBay and found the identical club slightly used for $165, and it was very slightly used with no marks on the top. I buy all of my clubs off of eBay. I am a 4 handicap and I can tell you after a few rounds they are used anyway.

+10 re: China! I say do your homework, check seller feedback, and make sure the savings are worth your while/risk. I have bought 5 cars off of eBay, $12K-$33K, and lots of golf clubs. Walk away from anything that doesn't feel right.

I could stand to be more of a player. I strike the ball pretty well, but working 80+ hours/week doesn't give you a whole lot of time to keep the short game in check.

True I work fewer hours than you (~60) and even then, with all this extra stuff that I have to do (studying for certifications) it leaves me with no extra time. Nice clubs btw, I had similar clubs back in the day.

+10 sir. for me, if it's not some sort of brick and mortar store, then I get suspicious.

9 holes, 2 over and a nice tan..

downside is that today at work was the first comment: "were where you yesterday afternoon?"

the sunnier it is the more my productivity plummets as of late...

I played my third round of the season last weekend, and it was laughable. It was the first time I've played in a stiff wind, and it beat the crap out of me. Still, I had a blast drinking beer and being out there with friends.

If I can get over being sick, I'll probably hit the range this weekend. I got a new 60* wedge this week I'm dying to try. Also, I still haven't taken the hybrid I got for Christmas out to the range, which means it's been useless on the course, and I'd really like to see what it can do.

I agree with Kwilk. If you take the time (and possibly money) to have someone teach you proper mechanics, you can have a lot of fun almost immediately.

I'm like you in the sense that I hate doing anything where I'm not the best at it, but golf is kind of odd in that regard. In a very real way you're playing against yourself, especially early on. That being the case, you really only have to do better than you did last time to feel satisfied. At some point that metric changes, and you're going to want to beat the people you're playing. But if you're just starting out, your goal is really just to be better than the previous iteration of yourself.

two consistent 77 and 78 at chantilly national here in the DC area.

their greens ruined my even rounds :p

I am thinking that my 60 degree 4 degree bounce was a little too much. might have to go back to more bounce. I am just getting way under it.
