They definitely are the best, but I've learned to take my medicine. Tried a 3 wood from thick rough on Friday and hit so far under the ball (all grass) that the damn ball went about 15 feet forward, hit the tree, and nestled up right next to it on the right. Walked on over, flipped the club around, and hit a left handed shot to get the ball back on the fairway. Should have just taken my medicine the shot before.

Probably my most ridiculous shot ever. 18th hole long par 4 over water 2 tiered green surrounded by bunkers. green slopes back to front towards the water. I end up in the back bunker on a down slope. Have a tough sand shot down the hill with a down hill lie to the flag on the front with water behind it.

My friend is about 10 feet behind the flag lining up his putt in the usual squatting position, keeping his balance with his putter.

I blade the hell out of my sand wedge, line drive directly at him. He dives out of the way. but his putter is still standing in the air. My ball hits the putter shaft, kicks back, and ends up within 10 feet from the hole. Made the par putt.

Was the most ridiculous thing ever. He still brings it up every time we play.

A bit of a different story, but one day several years ago I was playing on this course. We were on the hole that is pictured on the web page (the picture shows the green on the right and the next tee on the left, next to the lake). What you can't tell from this picture is that this teebox sits atop a 200 foot cliff which runs down the right side of the hole. Before we played the hole each of us teed up sideways and tried to hit the biggest, highest, longest drive we could right into the lake. We timed them and the longest before splashdown won. Don't remember the times, but the sight of those balls launching into the void and then the length of time before they hit the water was hella cool. Ecologically unsound, but hella cool.

I viewed it as making a small sacrifice to the golf gods so that they wouldn't need to take our balls that we put into play. It was also a way to make an extra $5 off my buddies (or them off me, I don't remember how the bets came out).

Okay, thinking about pulling my first "breakfast meeting" and hitting the course early Thursday morning for a quick nine by myself. My goal, of course, has always been to mix work and golf and this might be the beginning of slacking off to play golf on work time. I have a meeting until 7:30p or so the night before, so I can mentally justify this excursion.

Playing in the morning, with the dew glistening on the grass, is one of the most beautiful experiences a golfer will experience.

There's very few things I'll wake up before the sun comes up to do. Fishing and golf are on that short list for moments like this.

made a tee time at the course by my parent's lake house. nothing really notable other than on the 7th hole you hit your second shot over a marsh land. A lot of people try to go for the green in 2 or just come up short. it's clearly labeled "DO NOT ENTER. QUICKSAND PRESENT" all over that effing area, yet 5-6 times a year the coast guard has to use their nice helicopter and pluck dumbasses who go looking for their ball.

Inspired by this thread I headed out to the range today for the first time in about 5 years. I forgot how nice it is to have an hour by yourself to just hit some shots.

My trouble is that somehow over the last few years I seem to have found a massive cock-up in my swing. When ever my club connects with the ball the face has somehow opened about 35-45 degrees. The result is a slice that litterally makes the ball go round corners. If I hit it straight then I average about 185 yards with a 7 iron, but when I slice it, it goes 100 yards forwards and 85 yards to the right!

Any advice on a quick fix, or am I going to have to fork out for a pro analasys?

What does your wrist look like at the top of your swing? If it is torqued back that can open the club face a lot. top of your back swing you want the top of your hand to be along the same plane as your forearm (like you're making a fist to punch someone).

Where are your hands at impact? Does teh ball go straight first then slice, or right immediately and slice as well? having them way in from of the ball at impact with an open club face can cause you to block it and push hard right, then the open club face causes the slice on top of that.

And slow your swing down. 185 is a pretty big 7 iron. so I'm assuming you swing pretty hard. You haven't regained your timing from 5 years ago. just swing slow and work on contact. once you start grooving your swing better your clubhead speed will increase naturally.

Maybe take a video of your swing?? would make it easier to analyze.

^^^ agree on slowing your swing down. Overswinging gave me a huge slice until I caught my arms drifting up and away from my body. That forced me to bend my wrists down to compensate, which opened up the clubface...which made for a wild slice.

Unfortunately my local driving range doesn't have mirrors so I can't see my posture very well at the top of the swing, but when I use half/quarter speed they tend to be in a good position. The turn of the club seems to occur during the downward swing ; I suspect you may be right in that if the swing slows there should be less inclination for my hands to turn before the strike.

Based on the many experiments I have run on myself, video my instructor has taken, etc., I think the guys are correct. Swing slow and easy, swing through the ball. Don't worry about distance with any particular club, just let the club do its job.

Of course, easy to type, hard to execute. Go back a page and you'll see I'm doing that with my driver and fairway woods.

hard to say, assuming right handed golfer - are you leading your downswing with your left. pull with the left instead of pushing with your right. sometimes i feel my right arm leading the way to only slice the **** out of the ball. roll your hands through after contact. you are either blocking out your hands or coming over the top with your right shoulder.

Went and played a quick 9 holes with the old man today (Its taken a few decades to find, but we might actually have something to bond over now!).

The tip about letting the club do the work, worked a treat; some nice shots and a terrible round... still got a long way to go until I can shoot for par!
