DC Professional Sports

It's a good time to be a DC sports fan.

The Washington Wizards just won the NBA draft lottery, and presumably will use the #1 pick on Kentucky superstar freshman PG John Wall. The Wizards have a ton of money to spend next off-season after this season's salary dump, and free agents will be lining up to play with Wall. Hello, local guy Carmelo Anthony!

The Washington Nationals are much better than expected, and will call up superstar pitcher Stephen Strasburg in a few weeks. Curt Schilling has said that Strasburg may be the best pitcher in baseball the moment he gets called up. The Nationals have the #1 pick in the upcoming MLB draft, and presumably will pick SI cover boy Bryce Harper, who has been described as the best prospect since A-Rod.

The Washington Capitals flopped in the playoffs after a great regular season, but the nucleus is young and they have the best player in the game, Alex Ovechkin.

Hope springs eternal for the Washington Redskins. A new coach, a new quarterback, and an influx of new talent makes the playoffs a possibility next season.

^I think the fact that all the stadiums are right in the city are a big bonus too. its a pretty good set up to watch a game then go out afterwards.

I actually posted earlier that the Wizards should trade that pick. They need help up the middle and they aren't a "1" player away from even sniffing the playoffs. You could argue if they were 1 player away they wouldn't have the top pick, but the surrounding players are so bad that even if you brought Wall in with Gilbert (who because of injury isn't a top tier guy anymore) aren't going anywhere. Melo is from Baltimore which you could consider local if Baltimore wasn't such a 3rd world country. Besides, I don't think I want Melo in "Stop Snitchin' II", sometimes getting away from an area is a good thing.

Strasburg is good and the fact that the Nats are playing at a higher level means they haven't had to rush him, I wouldn't bring him up until near the trading deadline. If Hernandez continues to pitch well they may entertain offers for him and get a couple of decent prospects in return. They're doing great though and I have to think a lot of it has to do with Jim Riggleman.

Only in DC. We have arguably the world's best hockey player and nobody here really cares.

Six Flags is out of Bankruptcy and so are the Skins. This team is built for a fan placating playoff run.

last year (around april) i was in DC (during a week where it was like 70F coming from a snowed in week before) and it looked like the Capitols were doing really well/sold out. They had a game against the Penguins and the whole town was taken over by the games. it was cool to see the city with all the hockey jersey wearing fans just swarming. i don't know... i think you have to take wall and just make arenas into a 2 guard.... wall might even be a better option to go with over arenas at this point.

We're a city of bandwagon jumpers. I was just saying that Ovie is incredible, but people don't come out to see him they come out to see a winning team. If he was on a crappy team nobody here would come out.

Trading the #1 pick would be foolish. You would get players good enough to get you to 44-38, a #6 to #8 seed, and a first-round exit from the playoffs. The Wizards are rebuilding the entire team anyways, may as well start with a stud PG as the foundation. John Wall is the face of the franchise the moment he steps into DC.

^ I think you're putting too much stock in Wall. He's a very good player but he strikes me more of a T.J. Ford type. Besides in the last 10 years there has only been 1 PG selected at #1, I say you go out find a proven PG (court leader) and draft a Center (lug to stand in the paint) .

The Wizards are in a tough spot. They are stuck with Arenas and his bloated contract. Nobody will take him now in a trade. And they have about $17-18 million in cap space, which isn't enough to get a top tier guy either.

The last two ROYs have been John Calipari-coached PGs who left school after their freshman year. Coincidence? Possibly, but I think not. Calipari is slippery as hell, but he knows how to recruit and how to coach.

We need Wall just for the awesome nickname "Great Wall of Chinatown."

^ Wait...John Wall?? I thought we were talking about Paul Wall.

DC sports will continue to suck as always. It's unfortunate the contagion of annual false hope is being spread to the non-NFL teams as well. Seriously, have the Redskins not taught you a lesson? The lesson is that your teams suck. By definition.

He's not TJ Ford. Ford was frail, even before his neck injury. Wall is growing into that body which is already sturdy at 6'4" and nearly 200. More Rod Strickland (hopefully without the headaches)--in the same mold as Derrick Rose. Where I'd like to see Wiz shore the middle, who would you take at #1? Who's hollering to trade up for Wall to make moving back possible? The rest of the sports landscape is shaping up to be rather pleasant. Strasberg should be a major shot in the arm for the Nationals, even if only for marketing. I've enjoyed what the Capitals have done here in an NHL backwater. Hopefully, they can get over the hump. As for the Skins, hope springs eternal. . . .

i dont thikn arenas is untradeable. however, he being traded doesn't really affect the wizards prospects. theyll suck with or without him, and suck for years.

I'd look at trading the number #1 pick to the Nets for the number #3 and something else. I think the new owner of the Nets would like to make to put his stamp on the team and what better way to do it than to get the number 1 pick and have it be "your" guy. That's the way I'd sell it to him at least.

I would take DeMarcus Cousins @ #3.
