So for the N&M knits, would I need a 50 or a 52 if I'm typically a 40US? For reference, button-down shirts with 18-18.5 shoulder measurements and 20.5-21 chest measurements usually fit me the best.

Most probably a 52 if you don't want it to fit ultra slim. I'm a 48EU in pretty much all of my knits/cardigans/sweaters but need a 50 in my two N&M cardigans. My best fitting shirts measure around 17.5" shoulder- and 20" chest-width, which confirms my assumption that your N&M size should actually be one size bigger than mine ( providing that their knits and cardigans fit about the same ). What's your height and weight ?

5'10" / 175. I seem to carry most of my weight in my lower body, since my most recent measurement around the ol' love handles was 32". Still, it sounds like going up to a 52 might be the best idea if their sizing runs slimmer than comparable brands.

I'm 5'10" @ 165lbs and carry most of my weight in my upper body, so - yes - going up to a 52 sounds promising. You can always ask Rocco for actual measurements and play it safe, though... Link to the knit !?
