What's your work commute like? - Page 7

110 miles in the car... and it's provoking deep existential questions (and practical ones... heart attacks and long commutes go hand-in-hand ).

I knew a guy who commuted from Palm Springs to Burbank every day. That's 4 hrs in the car.

Yep, mine's a bit less, but no enough to matter.

In Beijing I had it easy with a 15 minute walk to the subway, 35 minute subway ride, then 13 minute walk to the office. At school, it's a very scenic 15 minute walk to campus where all my classes are close to each other. In high school, I had friends who had to catch the SIR from Tottenville to the ferry and ride the ferry into South Ferry, and take the 1 train up to Chamber st for high school. All to get there at like 8:00 or 7:30ish. I can only imagine that's nearly a 4 hour round trip commute for high school. The ones who took the express bus didn't save much time, but it was good for sleeping. I had an easy 30 minute 2/3 train ride.

In Beijing, if I felt like abusing my intern privileges I sometimes waited out rush hour and caught a quick 30 minute cab--I also left an hour or two early sometimes to skip the afternoon rush hour. Otherwise the Beijing 1 line rush hour packing is awful in the summer heat, especially if you get the train without air conditioning.

Bad traffic may add 15 minutes to the commute. I don't mind the travel time, but the tolls in NY are brutal.

And they're going up!

10 minute walk and 30-40 minute subway ride depending on the Gods. My gf's father commutes from Wales to London routinely which is 4.5 hours. I don't know how he does it.

25 - 45 minute taxi ride, I do emails from my iPhone. Fares are about $6-8 one way, usually walk about 100 ft.

10 minute bicycle ride to work.

To work it is a 3-5 minute drive depending on how the traffic lights are treating me. To school it is upwards of 10 minutes. But sometimes 20 minutes to find parking.... go figure.

I feel you man. I posted on the last page. It's about 85 miles for me. I can only imagine what the extra 30ish miles would be like. Do you like your job, at least?

5-8 min drive to and from work

Thanks. I tend to think that any long commute is rough. The only saving grace is that there's no real traffic. Stop-and-go would kill me. I saw some bit on a guy that has something like a two hour one-way commute that from New Jersey into NYC. It's a short distance but pure stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper traffic. I'd have a heart attack within a year.

I do like my job, but the commute prevents me from giving 100% to it (too few hours in the day, too wiped out at the end, etc.) and I hate that.

5 minutes walk and cross one road.

I can see where I work from my living room.

By bus and train: 1 1/2 hours. The worst part is that when

I get there it's a 10-minute walk (outdoors) to the place, so if it's raining really hard (or snowing)

I have to walk there in the bad weather.
