TMT says, among other things, consumption, or materialism, is a way of managing our death anxiety.

I thought that just meant buying an expensive sports car at 50.

Apparently we go through mid-life crises our whole lives. Shop 'cause we drop?

I've got some unworn shoes in my closet that I guess are supposed to help me outrun a certain tall, dark stranger.

TMT is awesome. There was a study presented at a recent conference I attended about how increasing a person's mortality salience improved their performance on time-sensitive tasks. The talk was called "The MacGyver Effect".

Thanks for posting this. I've had debilitating bouts of death-related terror as long as I can remember - I'm talking about the ages of 3,4, and 5 years old. I have these episodes much less often over the years, but they still occur; and I certainly hope that they don't become more frequent again as I grow older.

Yes, I experienced those terribly, almost every night, when I was a youngster. They seem to have gone away in adulthood, but I, too, fear whether they might return as I get older.
