I am really interested into the skinny ties that are 2 1/2 in wide but I having trouble choosing which ones. If I were to get three different ties from this site then which ones would be the best for me in the long term, especially for future suits.

If anyone could help me out then that will be great. Thanks!

Seems like you'd be equally well suited (pun intended) going to a department store or discount retailer.

TJ Maxx and Marshalls have a fairly good tie selection and they're all $15 or under. Their inventory is mostly department store overstock so quality should be on-par with Tie Bar or better. Not super high-end stuff but definitely wearable.

I'm a young business student myself (well-- a graduate now). I've gotten a few sweet ties at TJ Maxx and price is never an issue. I guarantee you'll end up leaving there with a tie or two (minimum).

I'm not saying don't order from Tie Bar, just check out that option.

I haven't found too many 2.5" wide ties at TJX or Marshalls. I've had marginally better luck at Filene's basement. YMMV.

You're right. They don't have a lot in the way of skinny ties but they do carry them. Like you said, it's mostly standard stuff but I have seen 2.5's there on occasion. I got a Calvin Klein skinny tie there last year that I was just wearing on Friday. Slick little navy number... probably exactly what OP is looking for. Basically, TJ Maxx is going to carry department store overstock; for better or worse. You do end up seeing a lot of trendy/ current stuff, but they sell all those pieces quickly.

So in the long-run the tiebar ties are not the way to go??
All I'll say is, despite the opinions of some on here, for $15 a tie, I've been very pleased with tiebar.com. Are they as nice as my $200 ties; nope. Are they nicer than my Geoffrey Beene ties; yep. Take that for what it's worth.

I'd say order one and see if it's worth a repeat purchase. Seems like a mixed verdict on here, and really at the end of the day it's your opinion that matters.

Definitely check out TJ Maxx/ Marshalls though.

I guess I'm puzzled by the notion that someone who can afford the occasional $200 tie owns Geoffrey Beene ties in the first place, let alone Tie Bar ties.

Quality over quantity is a cliche, sure, but like most cliches, it got that way because there's some truth to it.

A lot of my cheaper ties are from when I couldn't afford the higher end ties I now own. It also pays to have a few cheap ties for those situations where there's an increased danger of spilling/damage (such as the tie I had ruined at the wedding I was at last weekend). It hurts a lot less having to throw away a wine stained tiebar.com tie than a Brioni.

Don't be.

Some of the workmanship, such as the "pindots" in the third tie mentioned by the OP aren't really well done - they try to weave the dots in, however they end up looking like incomplete little squares.

Overall I've been happy with them after my first order (shipping costs aside), and would order from them again.

I agree with the comments about them being a little thick, however that doesn't bother me too much since I switched to only a half-windsor anyway (you thank SF!)

Wish they had some 3"-3.25" ones. The 3.5 I find too wide and the 2.5 too trendy.

I now find this to be my ideal range as well.
Where do you like buying ties?

Assuming you know how to tie a necktie...I've ordered many ties from the site and have not had any problem tying them

And thanks for the pin dot info. I was thinking of getting a pin dot tie here but not anymore. I was looking at Lands End too but I want to make sure of the quality. Do you guys think I'm better off spending $75-85 for a tie at Brooks Brothers or any of those department stores? What about Club Monaco?
