Hey I'm a new member here and I just recently found out they are closing one of my favorite clothing stores Martin + OSA. I really liked how it wasn't aimed at teenagers, but still wasn't "old" feeling.

Anyway I am wondering what else is out there, I do shop somewhat at J. Crew but their stuff doesn't fit as well, and I don't care for GAP or Banana Republic at all.

My girlfriend and I both loved that store and are wondering what else is out there for stores similar? Any help would be appreciated.

J Crew has the nautical influences that you saw in Martin + Osa.

Damn, they're closing! We just got one a few years ago! They were one of my favorites for basics like T-shirts.

2nd vote for Rugby and Club Monaco. Both have some great looking stuff (Rugby is more geared towards a preppy aesthetic, while Club Monaco toes a more sophisticated line), fit really well, and have quality that is at least on par with or surpasses that of J. Crew (but both stores tend to be slightly more expensive). And for the record both stores are owned by Ralph Lauren. The only downside to these brands is that they are more difficult to obtain. Both have a very limited store base and Club Monaco does not currently offer online sales.

It's really too bad they are closing down the stores, their stuff is a much better fit/style for me than jcrew or banana republic. I can't beleive I hadn't shopped their before, I guess I'll have to stock up on some things.

Sorry to hear they didn't make it. It is by no means high-end stuff, but they definitely had reasonably priced basics. I loaded up at their end of winter sale (sale price less 30%) last year. I bought a pair of jeans, two pairs of chinos, a cashmere sweater, several solid color t-shirts (short and long-sleeve), a belt, a fleece 1/4-zip pullover, and a casual tweed sportcoat; paid less than $300. I had bought a few casual sweaters at closer to retail from them previously.

I got an e-mail the other day about this. The location at the Americana in Glendale is closing on the 31st and everything is 50% off. If you're in the area, you know what to do...

Yep. I'm inclined to like plain, clean lines but those were some of the most boring, snooze-inducing items I've ever seen. Plus the name was an offensive affectation, copying the trendier boutique houses that have a "+" in their titles. Martin and Osa Johnson had nothing in common with the product. Safari clothes, a'la Willis and Geiger, maybe. Might as well open Ernest Hemingway Transmission or Disraeli's Teas and Coffees.

I liked this store. Great online sales (30% off sale prices + free shipping at one point), plain non-logo clothes and good fit. Too bad they won't make it. I've been trying to replace them with Lands' End, but LE just isn't the same. I've even looked at American Eagle, but the two stores are night and day.

Critique of similar stores:
J. Crew: why is everything so wrinkled? Plus, the suit silhouettes suck
Club Monaco: quality is questionable; dull monochrome colours
LE Canvas: not much of a difference from LE
LL Bean Signature: crappy fit; not even offered in flagship store
