I hear you ... but I don't think the children are blameless. The groom's major concern appeared to be whether or not the event would make the New York Times and/or Town & Country. It made both. He was happy.

BTW ... this wedding was in Georgia.

I'll add that when my sister eloped ... I was quite proud of her.

yup, 6 months ago. just me and my husband at the judges chambers. my father and sister witnessed.
we just did a quiet dinner after and a weekend at the four seasons. on monday we went home and got on with our lives. it was perfect. if i had to do it over again i wouldn't do a single thing differently.

^That sounds like it was great. I hate the whole ceremony of weddings, like somehow life is going to be so different and amazing after the wedding. In reality, it will not be any different- if it was grand before, it'll be grand after, and if it sucked before, it's still gonna suck after.

We had a cocktail party, a short ceremony, then dinner and dancing. everyone had a great time.

In hindsight my wife has now said many times that we should have just walked across the street to the county courthouse and gotten married there. I had suggested this (for the record!).

I think eloping is a fine idea for two adult people. Go for it. It's your marriage. On the other hand, you can do something non-traditional if you want.

And it is possible to spend far less than 50k. We spent nowhere near that.
