I have some on the stove right now. i'm starving and the smell just makes me more hungry, but it still has another hour or so to go. I should marry an indian woman.

I used to live in an apartment complex, where both of my neighbors were East Indians. When they first cook the curry, the smell is really good. But it "feels" like they eat whatever they cook over the course of a few days, at which point curry smells between that of Penhaligon blenheim soap and burrito fart. It's a very unique smell for sure.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but no curry should take an hour to cook.

an hour in not unreasonable. I spend about half hour just preparing the ingredients then another half an hour to get everything mixed. Now, if meat and lots of potato or carrot is in there, then maybe another 45 minutes to steam everything. And depending on how your tolerance of spice or saltiness, then another 45 minutes on low heat. No curry connoisseur is going to cook curry in an hour. This is the original method from the Indus masters.

I am Indian who eats Indian food 4 days a week. I have watched my mom cook Indian food for years now, and I can recall a handful of things that take an hour to cook. I am not counting preparation time, but once the gas turns on, an hour is quiet a long time. Your onions, chili peppers, and all the other spices will all go to hell if you cook them for an hour.

^^^They probably aren't using a steam cooker..

The taste of curry does not make up for the drawbacks of reeking of curry/having your clothes reek of curry.

I think it is worth it once in a while. Just like reeking of garlic after a good Italian meal is worth it, onion breath after a hot dog, etc. Another wonderful Indian cooking aroma is basmatti rice. Tilda brand is the best.

Curry smells terrific when it's being prepared and as it's being eaten. The smell quickly and mysteriously goes stale and rank a few hours later, and that fallout takes a long damned time to dissipate.

Try Diptyque's L'autre cologne. Not necessarily curry, but it might be a fragrance you'd enjoy. You might also like Montale's Greyland, though IIRC that one got discontinued.

It's a good habit to sauna the day after eating curry. It will purge the smell fairly quickly. I only have curry about once a week though. I couldn't imagine having it every day. There are a lot of FOB Indians who go to my gym. They tend to be extremely polite, but that curry smell on top of excessive cologne turns them into a walking cloud.

When I was a teenager I worked at a small hotel. When I first got the job, one boss was telling me about the other boss and said "She's a new-age indian, you'll like her." then clarified "You know, she dont smell bad."

The wonderful aroma of curry is almost a guaranteed deal-killer when it comes time to sell a house. I can't tell you the number of times I've taken buyers into a place that is perfect for them, only to have them spin around at the door when the smell hits them.

i like it when i smell curry coming from what my wife or mom makes. or from a restaurant or from someone i know.

but if i walk through some place and i smell curry coming from someone i dont know , i won't like it. i actuallly detest it.

to me, it 's all about the association.

kind of like, i hear a noise through the wall , i can put up with it, if it was someone i know like a family member, but i won't put up with it the slightest if it is some stranger.
