interview a few phones and pick one. How hard could that be? Find a quiet spot with no distractions don't be too tempted to have a pile of notes or your computer in front of you so you can just read off answers DO act as though it were a real live person interview. Consider even addressing an object, picture of the person, even your own reflection in a mirror. Humans need eye contact. I've even found a random picture of a dude off the internet and looked at it while talking because it helps

Do a search, noob. There are a couple of threads on this very topic already.

In your case, don't be yourself.

That and sit up straight, be dressed professionally, and smile. It all comes through on the phone.

And this is precisely why I dont post my ugly mug on WAYWT

  • Prepare like you would any normal interview. Have your resume in front of you so you know whats on there, don't try and go from memory.

  • And make sure you smile . Its true, you can hear a smile through the phone and it directly affects the sound and tone of your voice. Even if you feel cheesy as hell, it helps.
  • Get comfortable. I walk around and pace.
  • Make sure you send a thank you note afterwards or at the very least an email afterwards. Yes, even for a phone interview.
  • Probably most important, close the deal. ASK when you can come for an in person interview. Make them be the ones to tell you no. Of course, you're the conne-man, asking and being rejected comes natural

I thought it went pretty well. They discussed a second interview, which I would have to fly home for. But the fact that they brought it up is giving me hope. I tried to sell my communications (particularly writing) skills, enthusiasm, things like that.

Good and bad news. Good news, the folks who conducted the interview went into my contact's office and said they were really impressed. Apparently, I knocked off at least one other person they were considering (and he was an experienced state legislature employee). But...my competition consists of two recent MPP/MPA grads from Syracuse's Maxwell School, along with one or two from UAlbany's Rockefeller School (which is quite good and well-respected by the Albany insiders). I'm still holding out hope at this point, and maybe I'll make it to the next round. Even if I don't get it the plus is that they're looking to hire half a dozen people within the next several months. Now that they know I'm a great candidate, maybe I can finagle my way into one of those jobs.

Good luck! As you know, Syracuse is consistently ranked number one, and their grads tend to do very well; however, OSU is very good, too. All the best...
