Starting over in a new country

Has anyone here successfully started a new life in a foreign country?

I'm moving to the UK later in the year, and am interested in hearing anyones stories of success or failure in similar circumstances.

It looks like a lot of it will come down to luck; plus I have the added stress of moving over with my partner, so I have to hope that the both of us find suitable employment that keeps us both paid and happy enough to stay there.

From Australia, however I have british citizenship. Check & check, definitely have those traits.

About 1/3 of the population in London seems to be from Australia and NZ, so I'm sure there are plenty.

Nearly 5 years in the US, from Australia. But I have always travelled a lot and worked all over the place.

Moved to New Zealand from the U.S.

I disagree that it's about luck - it's more about how much homework and preparation you do in advance. Do everything you can to immerse yourself in your new life - walk the new neighborhood virtually using Google streetview, listen to the local radio stations streamed online, and talk to everyone you can find from the UK about their lives there.

Moving is stressful enough, but doing all that you can to set the expectations for your new life before you arrive will help alleviate some of it.

I moved from Oklahoma to Texas and all I can say is that if you can survive the first couple of years and get over the culture shock, eventually you begin to think of it as home. Fortunately you won't have to overcome the language barrier the way I did. That's half the battle.
