D.C. restaurant recommendations

Grandparents are coming to town tomorrow for a visit. They like good food but tend not to stray too far from American or Italian fare. I'm trying to find a good place for tomorrow night in Georgetown, Penn Quarter, or Dupont areas. Someone suggested Filomena in Georgetown. I thought about Clyde's but that place is mobbed on Fridays. Any other suggestions?

Someone just suggested Brasserie Beck. Looks good, any comments?

Obelisk is really excellent, especially for legit Italian. I must have eaten there 8 times 2 summers ago, and a handful of times since. They owner of Obelisk also owns Pizzeria Paradiso, another favorite of mine, but expect a wait and pizzas with thin crusts and not 14 lbs of toppings. Something to keep in mind for some, but something those of us who have been to Italy yearn for more.

Blue Duck is also excellent, as is 1789 (or whatever number it is, haven't been in a while. Awesome American food). I ate at Komi in Dupon Circle recently and it totally blew me away. Citronelle is also a personal favorite, they have been superb for years and continue to be superb.

Central, casual enough with great food that's not going to be too shocking to them.

Who's paying? If you are, then Arby's. If they are try 14 & K.

Filomena is OK--food is not outstanding and the emphasis on their celeb patrons is kind of a downer, but it's an experience. Not a critic's favorite. Good location though if you're wandering around gtown. Maybe you can stop in RL Rugby and have them buy you some clothes.

Beck is great but if they don't like mussels or beer they'll be missing out.

Central may shock them if they're very staid 1789 is a classic. I've heard Ris in the West End is very good in a classic American way, but a little fresher than 1789. Have not been there myself yet though.

BTW, I hope you don't get shut out of these places by waiting until today to make reservations for tomorrow night.

Yeah, waited too long. Just made reservations at Beck, they'll like the food there and it's a <10 minute walk from their hotel. Thanks guys.

Great service, good food. Don't order the oysters.

Is 1789 good again? I know they got a new chef. It was crap when I went after Ris left... got served bland, room temp shortribs and the Georgetown student that was my server was awful. Went to Citronelle the following night and my stomach thanked me.

Yeah, but the last time I went was over a year ago which was before Andres got more popular. It wasn't too hard to reserve back then; all I did was call a month before or the day of to see if there were any cancellations. I heard they're working on a better reservation system. It's really only worth going to once a year at most though since they only change 3-4 items of the 20+ course menu every few months.
