IDM-minimalist electronic appreciation?

The past year I've gotten heavily into electronic music. I really enjoy Intelligent Dance Music in the fact that it is very abstract music. It lets the listener delve deeper into the meaning of the song and the flow ideas and moods. Does anyone else enjoy this type of music? I spent a lot of time going through Aphex Twin's extensive library of music these past three months.

Yeah it's pretty sweet. Though I haven't really listened to it a lot since 2003 or so. Aphex Twin is amazing, as is some Autechre.

I agree--go listen to Gas. Also, Autechre's "Tri Repitae," Fennesz "Endless Summer," Boards of Canada's "Music Has the Right to Children." Kraftwerk is wonderful--Man Machine and Trans Europe Express are must must musts. But they're a little friendlier than the other stuff we're talking about.

For true electronic beat-driven minimalism: try anything from Tresor and Kompact labels
For glitch/click'n'cuts : a classic Click'n'cuts compilation(-scape label)
Among artists not mentioned : Vladislav Delay (Luomo), Swayzak, Monolake, Fluxion and Echospace/Deepchord (for dub-step)

IDM is a pretty broad category. Any sort of electronic music you like that falls in this category would be appreciated. We don't need to get all fussy over the semantics.

I saw glitch mob last week in Boston. Oh my word! The show was excellent. Feeling that heavy of bass against your body is an insane feeling.

the problem with the term IDM is that it was a blanket term (much like the word "electronica" itself) that was used to describe a very diverse set of music that evolved in the early 90s. Artists like Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Luke Vibert really have nothing in common save the fact that they were associated with certain labels (Warp or Rephlex) in the early 90s, and that they made electronic music that wasn't made for the dancefloor and was made to be focused on at home, or in a non-club setting. This was really revolutionary and music critics didn't really know what to say about it, so they just lumped everything on Warp into IDM. Which is really a shame, since Warp today is releasing stuff like Grizzly Bear and Jamie Lidell.

OP, what exactly do you mean by minimalist?
