Hi,

I'm considering planning a trip to India or Southeast Asia in the distant future and I would like to get some clothes made for me while I am there. None of the details have been set yet; I have not even settled on a destination, but I would like to know where in the world (not just Asia) I can find the best value in bespoke clothing and what the process would be like.

I am considering having the following items made, dependent on price and availability:

3 wool suits
1 linen suit
3 pairs of wool dress pants
several cotton dress shirts
5 casual cotton shirts
1 linen shirt

I have heard that some places are able to turn out a final product in less than a week, I would only be there for a maximum of three but would be willing to have the fittings done during that time and have the final products shipped to me. Which countries would be the best destinations for tailoring and how does the ordering/fitting process usually work?

for good, basic tailoring in a few days in a fun place you can't beat bangkok. not the best stuff, but better clothes than you might get at an american department store, and made to fit you perfectly, for less than you'd pay at the men's warehouse.

I second Bangkok, though you're going to have to do a lot of research to find out who the best tailors are (a suit above $300 from a reputable tailor should guard you against surprises like newspaper for canvassing, which happens in the cheaper stuff). You'll find on this forum that Hongkong has the highest-end suits for the best prices in the world, though it's $1200+ at a place like WW Chan (mind you a similar suit in the West would be $3000+ ). He can make a suit in less than 5 days I believe, and if you're vacating you probably don't wanna spend anymore time in HK than that (not very thrilling compared to SE Asia or India).

Never heard of anyone getting suits made in India. If you get one tere, let us know how it goes. My uncle got a couple nice suits in Beijing. He found someone at the big mall there, I will ask where he got it but I believe it was at this huge kind of mall place. There were tailors there and he had one make one for him. This was a few years ago though, before the Olympics. I've heard that prices have raised since then. He paid around $400 at the time.
