Exploring tattoo removal, anyone with experience? costs? procedure? did it work? etc.

I have a few smaller tattoos I got when I was in my teens and I am now considering removal (just sick of them). They are all solid black and mostly faded now anyway (which I have heard/read is good for removal as color is harder to get out). I wanted to see if anyone on here had any experiences with removal?

was it painful?
whats the cost?
did it work?
where is the current technology at (as I am sure it has come along way from just 5 years ago)?

I really want to get this done after this upcoming summer here in Boston so prob. about 4 months from now.

Very painful and very expensive (I've heard $100 per square inch.) Fortunately if you have lighter skin, black ink is the easiest to remove and has the highest success rate of around 95% plus. If you don't need them removed for professional or personal reasons I'd say by far the best option is to have them covered instead of removed. Find a good artist in your area and do a consultation.

well the one on my back I want gone is a stupid japanese symbol about 1 square inch in size (maybe 1.25"), the other is a tribal on my upper bicep, fairly small and thankfully not filled in totally (there is a lot of skin spacing within the particular design).

I do have very light skin and both are just black ink, which is substantially faded where there was filling done, I was drunk/hungover both times and bleed quite a bit which is what I assume led to the very poor filling job (or the tat artist just sucked) but either way I suppose that I should be thankful about it now....

I suppose the pain I can deal with, the price thats another issue, it pisses me off having to spend so much $$$ getting these fucking things removed, but hence being young and stupid.

Why not just get a coverup tattoo?

So a belt sander, 220 grit and a bottle of vodka is not the way to go?

It took me 10 visits over one year at $100 a pop to remove a quarter sized tattoo. They used the Yag laser and it feels like a rubber band snapping on your skin. You have to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the light the tool emits. Each session causes bleeding which takes a month to heal before you can go back for another treatment. Each treatment will cause the tattoo to fade slightly more than the last. The ink is broken up by the laser and absorbed into the skin. My tattoo is completely gone and you cannot tell unless I told you where it was. Well worth it. BTW red and black are the hardest colors to remove.

Was just talking to a tattoo artist and pretty sure this is the opposite of true. Yellows and blues and greens are the hardest.

But yeah OP, why not a coverup?

Another vote for getting them covered up. I would say go with the removal if it was in places easily visible, but it sounds like these are mostly covered up anyways. Find a good artists and think of some ideas you would want to cover them with. The symbol should be easy to cover with a small tattoo that would only run around $100.

A tattoo artist is not a Dermatologist who removes tattoos with a million dollar Yag laser.

From the little research I have it seems black is actually the easiest to get rid off while blues and greens are the hardest.

This is exactly what I have found.

Hi All,

There's nothing worse than having something on your body that is hard to get rid of, it doesn't matter if it's a weight, style or cosmetic issue, you have to live with it everyday. I know that most people that have made tattoo mistakes do so while in their teens or early 20s.

As people mature instead of making rash and questionable decisions they spend time researching and weighing up the consequences of their actions. Unfortunately tattoo removal can be a very expensive consequence of an earlier ill-informed decision.

If you're still happy with having a tattoo but don't like your current design then your cheapest option is to change the existing design into something more pleasing. For great information on all of your tattoo issues take a look at http://tattooissues.com

There you should find simple explanations and solutions to all your problems.

Hope everything works out for you

+2 for the tatoo removal. For every mistakes you make, you need to pay... But you will feel better afterward
