According to M. Knight, the change in pronunciation was intentional in order to make the names truer to "Asian" pronunciation. Meanwhile, he picked white actors for clearly "Asian" characters?!?!?
My kids insisted on seeing it despite my dire warnings, so we went. Perhaps it is because I went in expecting the worst, but I found it watchable. Just barely. It actually comes in around the midpoint of the crappy family movies I've had to sit through over the past few years. It even created a nice jumping-off point for family discussion afterwards, while we all ripped on what was bad, tried to inventory the changes in plot and characters, and discussed the issue of racebending (which first came up earlier this summer with Karate Kid, which we haven't seen). Neither of the kids thought it was a good movie, but both of them liked seeing
I hope that Paramount has enough faith in the material to continue the trilogy--with someone else calling the shots. A $70MM opening weekend, playing against Eclipse and despite the dismal reviews, may be just enough to get the sequels green-lit.
