Non-medical technology, that is. I think it just adds to stress/ADD. Efficiency does not equal happiness.

Go!

the technology of speech recognition just allowed me to complete an essay 3000 words long in just one hour. Now I'm about to go out with friends and get drunk instead of spending the rest of the evening desperately typing.

Efficiency sure makes me happy. What have you got against dishwashers and external HDDs?

Technology increases convenience and choice. If your boss expects you to reply promptly to an e-mail sent at 11 PM on Saturday night, blame him, not your Blackberry.

Internet pornography allows me to release the poison my body builds up on a daily basis. Were it not for such release I would certainly have committed dozens more rapes already.

Life seemed boring before technology

I think if you let technology dominate your life you're an idiot...

But if you take the good from non-tech stuff (i.e. interacting with real people, engaging in fun physical activity, seeing things and living life) with the tech stuff (using a car/train/bus/plane instead of walking/rowing a boat, etc) I think you will be OK

That's taking DSB a bit too far...

I was going to say that there are drugs to deal with your primary complaint of stress/ADD, but I realized that would fall under medical technology.

The only reason efficiency seems good is because we are expected to be efficient (because of technology). Chicken and egg. With no electronics, we would expected to be slow mofos and completely inefficient. Probably less stressed out too. It's not like bankers work less hours than they did in the 1970s before computers. Think about it.

before there was technology, people had less goods, less variety in their diets, less entertainment. while those might not sound too important in the big sceme of things, pretty much when ever people without those things are offered a chance to obtain those things at the expense of thier previous lifestyle, they drop their previous lifestyle like a rock, and are willing to work much harder and with much less status. that leads me to believe that more people, if not all people, consider those things good.

You are not getting deeper into the point. The point is that of course we all use technology. We have to! It's not socially acceptable or feasible to not do so. It's really uncontrollable at this point. So of course I am using it.

My point is that if the entire paradigm shifted to one without advanced electronics, we would be better off. Or at least not worse off.

oh, and Metro - I'm not any happier now than I was before the web, laptops, and credit cards. I have more things, though, for what that's worth.
