Dear Chicago: what are your favorite places to get a drink?

(going there this weekend and looking for recs... lots of Chicago food threads but few drinkin threads)

Feel free to point out:

1. Good cocktails
2. Good wine bars
3. Good beer selection
4. Good dive bars
5. Good food/snacks
6. Good views
7. Etc.

I'm not looking for nightclub type recs, but feel free to mention em too.

The Map Room is the best beer bar in the city, I found. I left a lot of my dignity at Miller's Pub one night so I know it is good for a night out. There was this one really trendy bar on top of a hotel in downtown that was really nice. Forget the name but it had a great view and these fire pits which were cool, except they were blazing in the middle of August and it was already hot.

The Violet Hour (Wicker Park) is one of those "speakeasy" type places with very high-end, well-made drinks. Probably the best-quality drinks in Chicago.

Drinking at Matchbox (River West) is an interesting experience.

Off the top of my head:

Cocktails - violet hour (trendy but great) peninsula bar (old school)
Wine Bar - Tasting Room (nice skyline view upstairs); Rootstock (trendier but I like the TR)
Outdoor - Roof at the Wit (trendy); twisted spoke on ogden (dive)
Beer/country/Austin vibe - Big Star (great and cheap tacos, great music)
Kinda divey w/ music- California Clipper
Music + Beer - Phyliss' (good ribs next door at smokedaddy)

Scotch - The Duke of Perth
Beer - Hopleaf

Holy fuck, so many good options. Danny's - Good music Violet Hour - Excellent cocktails Map Room - Excellent beer selection Big Star - Excellent cocktails, and ridiculously good tacos...plus an amazing patio Happy Village - Cheap beer, and one of the best patios in the city Whistler - Uber-hipster bar, but great cocktails, and good music Green Mill - Touristy, but still excellent jazz club on the north side Old Town Ale House - The best dive bar I've ever been to

BEST BURGERS EVER: Go to Kuma's Corner!
Hotdogs: Hot Doug's
Tapas: Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba
Sweet tooth: Molly's Cupcake

man fuck hot dougs. That wasn't even the question, but "Fuck Hot Doug's" has been, is, and will always be my answer to when I hear that place mentioned.

Coobah is actually a great place for drinks, Shore. Really good food, good prices. The sangria is great, but if its a hot summer day, it will be even better.

there is a bar 3 minutes walk from my house that has a half dozen good draft beers and makers mark, which is pretty much all i need. the bartender knows my name and my son, I usually find a half dozen friends there, and they have 3 pool tables. I don't really need to go anyplace else.

Cafe Iberico is always one of my favorites................good drinks and tapas, and many good-looking girls (usually in groups!) there :-)

Dive-ish and all have good music- Empty Bottle, Whistler and the Hungry Brain.

+1 on Duke of Perth, Hopleaf and the Map Room. Duke of Perth does all-you-can-eat fish and chips a couple nights a week too.

Just down the street from Duke of Perth is Le Creperie. They've got a great selection of fancy European liquors and the crepes are good too.

  • Hop Leaf - A ridiculously large beer list with a focus on Belgian specialy brews. The Belgian-inspired menu is great, but the buckets of mussels are especially tasty.
  • The Map Room - another beer connoisseur's paradise
  • Ed and Jean's - Tiny pool table, check. Elderly owner who's owned the place since 1946, check. Cheesy bar tchotchke (including a lit Schlitz can), check. This place (near the Map Room) is the ultimate in Chicago old man/dive bars.
  • The Hideout - On a dead-end industrial street, this place has a great dive-y, hipster bar up front and a performance space in the back that has the feel of a 1950s rumpus room and features music ranging from alt-country (Neko Case used to perform here regularly when she lived in town) to avant-garde jazz.
  • Webster Wine Bar - Quiet, cool and staffed by servers who really know their vino.
  • The Lodge - Amid the craziness of Division Street this tiny place is (in Richard Roeper's words) "an Old Country Buffet for players".
  • Simone's - A bit off the beaten path in the Pilsen neighborhood on the South Side, this place is frequented by artists, musicians and various other bohemians, and its decor of neon lights and pinball machines has to be seen to be believed.
  • The Duke of Perth - Since the demise of the Red Lion, this place is the best representative of a British (as opposed to Irish) pub in town.
  • Sheffield's - Of all the Wrigleyville joints, this is the best place to soak in the pre-/post-Cubs game experience - plus a friend of mine now runs the place
  • Small Bar - A great soccer-oriented sports bar serving killer cheeseburgers.

I've excluded lounges and other "see-and-be-seen" places as well as places that are primarily restaurants or performance spaces (e.g. the Velvet Lounge).

Though I'll certainly defer to the recs of all of those who actually live in Chicago, I spent about six months on a temp assignment there recently. And while I'm sure that a lot of my recommendation is just based on the proximity of where I was living to where I was drinking, I enjoyed both the Clark St. Ale House and Celtic Crossing (both roughly Clark/Superior in River North.)

The Charleston in Bucktown is a great dive bar. Most people have already named my favorites, +1 for Duke of Perth & Map Room. The Long Room is also good, and Bluebird was decent on the one trip I took there. Nice sig, ld111134.

This is the best list I've read so far, I see we have similar tastes. Another couple good beer spots to add to the list would be Long Room, The Fountainhead, Revolution Brewery and even Goose Island has a decent selection and pretty good grub. Roof at theWit is the best rooftop lounge in the city, Bar DeVille is another great place for handmade cocktails, if you love beer and pork you can kill two birds with one stone by checking out The Publican over on Fulton. A couple other good wine bars are Enoteca Roma and Juicy Wine Co. (although the name might have changed), best burger hit up Kuma's who also has a very respectable beer list. Dives you have way too many, but Goldstar, Happy Village, Lemmings, Rainbo, Club Foote and Tuman's are some of my favorites. Cleo's has great bar food and so does Five Star (I am being kinda bias because I live in the area and can walk to all of these places.) One beer ya gotta try is Three Floyd's Gumball Head and Two Brother's Domaine DuPage, if you have any questions snag my number from Mauro and I can help ya out if ya need it...
