Using Skype on my phone's wifi abroad?

So I'm trying to upgrade to a smartphone and I think I've found the one I want (HTC Incredible with Verizon). The only problem with it (on paper, I've not held it yet) is that it's not a global phone. It's not a huge issue, but it'd be nice if the phone were global.

So my question is, can I use the phone's wifi capabilities to use Skype to make calls if I'm abroad (I'm live in the US and take holidays in Eurpee occasionally)?

The phone won't pick up a signal in Europe, so I can't roam by accident or anything. But if I can pick up a wifi signal at the hotel, let's say, can I then just use Skype to make calls and avoid dealing with Verizon?

thanks to anyone who knows the answer or can point me in the right direction.

Yes, because it uses wi-fi, which is universal. But if you're traveling, then you would probably have your laptop which could also Skype.

Okay cool. Thanks Kent. Def. no laptop, though. I have no idea why I'd bring it on vacation.

A small netbook is great for movies/tv/internet when traveling. You can also tie up any planning loose ends when you arrive, like checking out Yelp for good restaurants. It's not heavy, and it's inexpensive enough that you wont be too upset if it breaks or gets stolen.

Yes you can use Skype on any wifi connection. Skype calls will be free - numbers to phone numbers will cost you. But it will cost next to nothing, really. A few cents a minute. Also, in a convoluted but very doable way, you can make calls from a "number" if you have Google Voice and an internet connection for free. But you'll have to get a GV number and do some research if you want to do that.

Another tip is to bring a portable router with you to use in hotel rooms that don't offer wireless. I used my Apple Airport Express when I was in Japan last year. Te hotels I stayed had free internet in the room, but no wireless, so I connected the AE the cable and was good to go! W/ the AE, I was able to use skype on my iphone w/out leaving my hotel!
