Really? Maybe if you made it out of the sweatpants/ I have a jean question threads more often it wouldn't seem so stupid. My post was in response to the following:
"this stuff is huge in the streetwear community. if you go to brooklyn every single shoe spot has these and the other polo models. Also every other person is wearing them."
The point being, just because something is popular (i.e. true religion, ed hardy, t-shirts with "clever" sayings) does not make it stylish. The vast majority of individuals have no sense of style whatsoever, so they follow the trends under the assumption that wearing whatever is popular= being stylish.
As for the second part of my post, it is very true that a good number of people here would choose not to wear an item if it became extremely popular. The number of people willing to shell out $300+ for jeans without back pocket stitching, or $200+ sneakers that the average person couldn't tell apart from a pair of $50 chucks goes to show that many SF's are willing to go to great lengths to wear things that no one else (or at least no one they will run into) would be wearing. Many people interesting in fashion want to be ahead of the trends (unique/ no one else wearing it), not follow them (yay! it's popular!) Further illustrating my point is the constant hate for brands like Gap and J. Crew simply because mall brands= commoners. I'm not saying i agree with any of these ideas, but sift through a few of the different threads and you'll see plenty of examples of this type of thought process.
