How much of a compensation increase to move?

How much of a total compensation increase (base + non-guaranteed bonus) would you require before you take a new job in the same field under similar conditions and general location?

Depends on the differential in cost of living and above all in my interest in living at that location - or lack thereof.

I would take a pay cut to go somewhere nice. Pay me double if you want me to work in Omaha or nyc.

I don't buy into the whole cost-of-living pay adjustment thing. My absolute expenses (medical, drug habits, prostitution expenses, B&S addictions, etc.) follow me wherever I go.

Yes but hookers in NYC cost way more than hookers in Bangkok just as coke in NYC costs 5x as much as near the Mexican border.

In my hyopthetical, the new job is around the corner from the old job. How much more $ (as a %) would it take to make you jump?

I would say about 30%.

That is the general guideline that I have read but sometimes 30% more would make you overpaid for the same work.

Whatever the market conditions dictate for your experience.

I always try to keep on top of what people in equivalent positions get paid at other firms in the city. At the moment what I get paid is about right.

I'm a senior mining/geotechnical engineer, and moving to a site based role in the sticks demands a 40% premium to what I get now.

I'm pretty sure that moving out of NYC would mean a significant cost of living salary reduction, unless it was to London or Tokyo. Which I would be totally fine with.

If it's just a lateral move to a new corporation in the same city, you better get a nice bump. 25-30% does not seem unreasonable. Lateral moves can get dodgey on your resume.

A lot, but that is partially due to the economy and budgetary issues that we have faced at work.

"Normal" situation, I'd agree with everyone. . . somewhere in that 30% neighborhood OR if there was something significantly intriguing about the new place (possibility to go back overseas, vastly different scope compared to now, etc) I would consider it for less.
