Whats the skinny on skinny jeans?

guys please bear with this n00b and be gentle

I want to redo my wardrobe a little bit but I'm not sure how long this skinny jeans run will last.

A little about me: I'm 5'7" 135lbs. My whole life I've dressed pretty casual. I wear jeans almost every day. Never super baggy, usually wear regular fit (not wranglers) with sneakers.

I tried on my first pair of skinny jeans the other week, I think they were Levis Super Skinny or something but those pants were tight; literally very tight lol. I might not end up wearing something that skinny.

Anyways, just thinking of pairing that with some G-star Raw type sneakers. But before I go out and attempt to re-invent my look, I want your advice on how long this trend will last or if it is just a fad.

Thanks

just a fad

The world may never know... Just go do what you want. Shouldn't really worry if it dies tomorrow.

While slim (which is probably slimmer than what you wear, think Levis 514s) has been in since the 1960s, skinny is a much more trendy thing. It's a striking look, but it also looks awful on a lot of people, and it's difficult to pull off.

Honestly, I've never seen 510s work on someone your size. Maybe try some 511s and see how they feel. Also, go back through the WAYWT threads in Streetwear and Denim and see what you like. Seeing various looks can really influence your idea of what you want to go for.

Good luck!

If you can walk, they aren't skinny enough.

Skinny jeans only work if you have the looks, legs and style of a Scandinavian pretty boy.

man, some of you guys spend way too much time worrying about what is or is not a trend or trying to guess what is next. if someone told you it wasn't a trend and was timeless, you wore that item for awhile and loved it and then the same person said they just tricked you and that it was actually an of the moment trend would it make a difference? does it make people feel superior to not participate in something that can look very good and stylish but for some people is a "trend"? how are you guys defining trends? What is popular in "popular fashion" like GQ, what the general consensus is at the mall stores, what is most worn by the general public, what is worn most by people who are "into fashion", what is runway trends and patterns? just wear the shit and look good. it's not as hard or stressful as people want to make it

that's all well and good but where can i buy what CELEBRITY X is wearing??

Seriously, just buy what you like and wear it.

Who cares if its a trend or not, if you think you can pull it off, go for it.

At your height/weight, they should be pretty easy to pull off.

Levi's 510 are ridiculously skinny. They are not a good representation of skinny jeans as they are about the skinniest ones available. Look at Levi's 511 for a more realistic cut.

I know there are variations amongst different companies versions of "regular fit," but why do you say "not wranglers" as opposed to "not Levi's" or "not Joe Bob's) or not "fill in the blank"?

Good points, but...for some people knowing if something is trendy (or how long the trend may last) is related to how much money they can spend on their purchases. For example, some one with a fat bank account can buy skinny jeans today and not worry if they go out of style in month or couple of months, but for someone who really needs to budget their purchases and don't have that extra cash they can't really afford to buy something that isn't going to be around for a longer period of time. A good example is raw denim, if it takes a year or more to get them looking like one wants them, then buying something that will still be okay in that year or more is a much better purchase--especially for those people that can't just donate an item and move on without batting an eyelash.

Doesn't take a year or two to have raw denim look good at all. Most like the darker look of it best. It does take a week or two of wearing for them to soften up if you buy an especially rigid pair. The bottom line that i was getting at is you guys are worrying way to much and turning clothing (which if you're on this forum i'm assuming is a hobby of sorts) into a chore and stress. Chances are you guys don't know what is "in or out" or what that even means or how to tell that is going on. The term "trend" isn't a negative thing necessarily. The whole "timeless" thing has been a trend recently. Even simple stuff like perfectos, motos, bombers in terms of leathers come in and out of trendiness. Perfectos are kinda "in" at the moment which isn't to say they'll look stupid in 3 years. If you get super tight april 77 joey jeans they might look a bit weird on you just as you age. Slim-skinny jeans will look fine though as long as you stay in good shape. I don't think the BoO, steven alan prep thing will be quite as big in 2015 and neither will the EG/WWM stuff. Military inspired stuff has been in the past couple years and is waning lately but still looks good and no one bats an eye. I dunno. You guys are just being silly imo

I'd go for more of a slim straight leg jean, skinny jeans (in my opinion) look bad on most people, but hey, that's just me

something like the 511 is closer to what you'd want, or if you're trying to go raw, something like the APC new standard, which, although slightly tapered, still fit more or less like a straight leg
