My Crossfit Baseline Assessment - Page 2

But damn, this baseline assessment kicked my ass hard. The exercises were:

500m row on their rowing machine
40 air-squats (have to touch a 12" medicine ball when you squat down)
30 weird situps with no ankle support
20 burpees
10 pullups

I thought I was in pretty good shape going into this, with experience in all of the above exercises except the rowing machine

Well, that row machine destroyed me. After I got the machine to about 250-300 meters, I could feel most of my muscles starting to fatigue. And after I got up from the row machine, I felt flat-out weak and beaten.

The rest of the exercises I stumbled through to a finishing time of 7:15

I'm guessing I did poorly because I just don't have any experience on the rowing machine, but I was honestly surprised to see how beaten I was after finishing. After finishing, my lungs burned for about 30 minutes, and I could barely walk for the first 10 minutes. And I don't consider myself in poor cardio shape at all; I ran 4.2 miles two days ago at a 7:20/mile pace at 4,500 ft of elevation.

Oh well. Was an interesting experience.
Sounds good OP! You have the dedication and drive but there are only a few things that I would change. YOu should focus more on compund lifts. Learn how to do "the big three" with proper form first of all. If you aren't deadlifting...then what are you waiting for? START! All of those isolation movements will not do anything for ya'....if you truely want to get big I have only two words for you...SQUATS AND MILK! Use a three day a week, full body workout such as Rippetoes or Madcow 5x5. The mass will come. Just make sure that you are getting 8 hours of sleep a night and eat, eat, EAT! If you are like 90% of the "lifters" out there, then you will probably ignore my advice and go on a split consisting of pointless bicep curls and lat pulldowns. Don't be that guy! I can't tell you how many people I have seen wasting their time like this in the gym and achieving no results. I hope that you take this advice that I have given you and use it. You will not be disappointed. Good luck with your goals!

Ha ha! I just went to the gym today and tried out tabatas on the rowing machine to see how fast a 1:29 was. I couldn't even get there! Best I could got to was maybe a 1:36.

+1

Crossfit is just a bunch of random so called "functional" exercises put together with only one goal in mind... to beat the clock. Word of advice: train smart. I actually train with pro and Olympic athletes and you'll never see any of them doing the stupid shit crossfit does. Just my. 02.

I train at a crossfit gym

I don't do crossfit

It's the only place around with bumper plates. They're p. cool though, but man do I cringe when I watch them do olympic lifts. The trainers know how to do them well enough, but they just don't know how to teach them, apparently. They try to teach by showing over and over again, rather than by actually correcting mistakes. "Watch me, now you do it!" doesn't always work. rambleramble

So, what's your secret?

Well, I am a former D-1 Nose Tackle, I run two-a-days 6 days a week which include weighted hill and prowler sprints. I train heavy 5x5 and there is no secret, I put work in and since '07, I've cut down from 295lbs to 185lbs. I guess it is a great story since I don't pay some douchebag $200 a month for the promise of becoming an "elite athlete" while snapping photos of me doing 50lb poorly formed snatches. So, why don't you go and eat a hot bowl of dicks...

Whenver I think of Xfit, I always imagine their super pullup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7spRknkD1hU IS THAT REALLY PULL up or somekind of acrobatic maneuver?

You sound like a really good example of how elite athletes can crush crossfit workouts, but doing crossfit is a really poor way to make yourself an elite, or even above average athlete.

Nope, I left U of I for art school halfway through my Sophmore year, I met my girlfriend at the time and gave up on weights, working out and pretty much any physical activity (except fucking). Anyways, we split a few years after, I had just had gallbladder surgery and dropped 20+lbs from that (mostly water weight and lack of eating solid food), so I decided to continue to drop the weight. So, I went from 270lbs at that time to about 210lbs (motivated from a break-up), I had a slight relapse after a year of random injuries and what not. I went back up to about 245lb and 2.5 years ago, I made a huge push and dropped 50+ in about 5 months and at one point got down to 175lbs. I got back into to lifting and training like I did when I played ball and did it with a clean diet, gave up booze for a year and exercise...

A D-1 nosetackle leaves a big university to go to art school. Didn't that movie star Chris Farley?

Elite? no. Better athlete? most certainly.

99.9% of us won't be playing professional sports.

I was being sarcastic, man.

I do the same exact thing.

5x5, sprints, stairs, and some plyometrics. I try to toss in a bit of long distance to add some flavor.
