Anybody Been Bitten by a Dog Lately?

Was running last weekend, wearing an iPod with in-ear earbuds, merrily listening to Blondie and minding my own business when a ******* dog came out of nowhere and chomped down on my thigh from behind..

I didn't hear him coming, and noticed nothing until the sharp pain of teeth sinking into my leg. I popped him on the eye out of instinct, and he let go. This was a large dog, probably a hundred pounds or so, and according to the owner, is a "rottweiler mix". Talk about a hassle. Had to get a tetanus shot, on two different types of pretty strong anti-biotics, and the guy could not produce a rabies vaccination (claims he lost his tag, and this is in the country, so he also claims to have gotten his dog vaccinated at a county clinic where they set up tables in a parking lot and people stand in line to have their pets vaccinated). To make a long story short, the dog was "inspected" by the health department (mandatory reporting of dog bites at the hospital) and will be visited again in 10 days to make sure it's healthy, but talk about a ****** ******* day. Why can't idiots keep their ******* monstrous dogs leashed and controlled?

I will resist the urge to post pics.

Yikes. Glad to hear you're OK, relatively speaking. Here's hoping you're in the clear with the rabies stuff; I've had those shots, and it's no fun.

Not lately but in the past and it sucks. The last dog that tried was a pit bull out in the country. It met it's demise with a 357 mag round in the head. The owner was charged by the police for not keeping it leashed in a public place among other things.

Glad it wasn't worse. I've been chased by dogs while cycling, but never been bitten by a dog intending to injure me. Unfortunately, there have been very serious cases of dog bites in this area where people have been badly injured, including one death, IIRC. I'm glad you're okay.

Yikes, gnatty, hope you heal up fast. Nothing worse than getting jumped by a big dog. Be well.

damn, I am sorry to hear that gnatty, and wish you a speedy recovery.

I do tend to hate on dog-owners for this very issue, although I've been lucky enough to avoid major confrontations.

An excellent question. Situations like this are what make life difficult for responsible dog owners.

Sorry to hear about your experience; hope everything heals up in a hurry.

You should have killed the dog.

I don't know for certain but I think the owner should be responsible for any medical bills incurred. I know when an off lead dog attacks an on lead dog, the owner is responsible for any vet bills for the on lead dog.

Terribly sorry to hear about your experience and sure hope you don't have to get rabies shots, although I guess it's not the same unpleasant ordeal it was when I was a younger fellow.

Letting any dog run around uncontrolled is a bad business. If it is a large powerful dog with human-aggressive tendencies, it becomes exponentially worse! Most "country" dog owners are bloody awful about that sort of thing in my experience.

If the owner of the dog has any kind of homeowner liability policy, it might be worthwhile going after him for some kind of settlement. Very often people like that don't, though, in which case it might not be worth your while trying to get blood from the proverbial turnip.

got bitten when I was 7 by a german shepherd..., don't really remember much about it, but since I don't have any weird disease right now I guess it had been all right...

I hope you get well soon and avoid any further complications.

I was bit in the head by a neighborhood dog when I was a kid (maybe 9-10 yrs old) and nobody (including my parents) did anything about it. Of course I wasn't hurt too badly, just a little blood coming from a tooth mark on the top of my head. It was scarier than the damage that actually happened.

Horrible. Hope you're OK. Document your expenses. Take pictures for documentation.

A few decades ago I got chased by a dog while on my bike. I ended up wiping out and breaking my fall by holding my arms out in front of me, jamming my right shoulder so badly that I can still feel it to this day.
