An Adolescent's Dilema

At 16 did you have an interest in the clothes you wore to the extent that you do now?

I think it's difficult to remain age apporpriate while still conforming to the typical "style forum guidelines". The vast majority of 16 year olds interested in clothes are of the hypebeast/sneakerhead type, which i think is a terrible "style".

At 16 its hard to wear alot of the makes/styles that older people typically wear.
I even get questioned for wearing desert boots! However, I don't really see the point in wearing "young" clothes as i would like the knowledge and experiecnce i gain with clothes at this age be carried on into later life, it seems like a wast of time wearing clothes that i know i will lose respect for in an attempt to fit in. Sometimes i feel as though no one appreciates or even acknowledges quality clothes and that if i'd spent the money on a couple of pairs of Nikes i would get more recognition.

So in your opinion, should young people dress in a way thats associated with their age?
At 16 do you wish you were intrested in the makes/styles you currently wear?

Save it for college, and beyond. Its temping to spend it now, but your funds will go quickly come then. No one really cares much about clothes now, look at your peers. You've already noticed this aspect. Spend it on girls, cars, alcohol, outdoor trips, vacations, camps, ect instead if you have to have an outlet for some spare cash. Unless, you're going to be able to suck on the parent's teet for a handful of years to come, it will go quickly in a few years. If you're still interested in clothes by the time you're in school, I bet your tastes will have changed in style anyhow. This means by not blowing your money now, you won't have wasted it when you had it.

Like what? Are you dressing like an MCer with "fun socks" or what? I'm 17 and been dressing "outside my peer group" for a while, mainly fast fashion/target with a few Raf Simons/drkshdw things. I actually recieve a bunch of compliments. It sounds like you're just dressing to impress people, do it for yourself, dammit. I agree with erdawe though, you shouldn't spend alot on clothing, (or really material stuff in general) at this age. Spend it on fun stuff with other people. You're more than likely going to outgrow most of your clothes anyway. Maybe check out H&M?

When being casual ,wear casual clothes - jeans, cords, button ups, t-shirts, sneakers, etc. When being formal wear formal wear. Styleforum comes in discussing/exploring ideas of mutual interest - brands, trends, sizing, etc. That's what you can learn from and should explore at any age.

Stye is essentially your image, this forum is heavily orientated around "impressing people" if you were doing it for yourself surely you would just wear the most practical things possible?

I never pay retail for anything designer. And i have checked out H&M, i would like my clothes to survive more than a handfull of wears... which i think anyone is entitled to regardless of age.

Why should people our age not buy "material stuff"? As long as it's proportionate to your affluence and not restricting you from spending it on other, more important things (apparently cars, women and alcohol) then whats the problem?

And no i'm not dressing like an MCer, however there are some things, such as the recent workwear trend, that i think would look odd on someone our age.

just my advice, if youre 16, you got alot of living and laying the field to go through , so i suggest you hang up this account and tune in perhaps after college and you established some foot in the door in a career. just looking out for you, as i see this site as very addictive and can be a negative influence to some who are still young. most senior members and pathological members here deal with their issues their own way, theyre adults, however, long after getting growing up taken care of first (i dont mean that in the mental sense though) good luck

I've never had anything from H&M fall apart. Their clothes are poor quality in that the fabric often looks and feels cheap, but they don't fall apart.

If you're dressing for yourself, receiving compliments from others should be pretty irrelevant and not really worthy of mentioning to others.

It depends on the line. The Modern Man Classic line is decent. The regular Man and LOGG are lower quality and more casual, and I have ripped polos putting them on.

Well you obviously lead a very unadventurous life! I also never said they fall apart, they don't "survive" interms of holding up shape, mainting fabric texture, colour etc. However they do also literally fall apart, in my experience.

I really doubt you'd look out of place in:

suede loafers, boat shoes, chukkas, ect. A great pair of selvage jeans and maybe button down collar shirts with the sleeves rolled up.
